Rebel seniors reflect on good memories
Saturday evening’s game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the annual “Egg Bowl” will be the final home contest for 18 Ole Miss seniors. The class, which includes safeties Johnny Brown and Fon Ingram, linebacker Jonathan Cornell, and Oxford native Zach Brent, helped changed the fortune of the program over the past few seasons with back-to-back trips to the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.
Two of the seniors who will honored before Saturday’s game, defensive tackle Jerrell Powe and defensive end Kentrell Lockett, could return next year, but for the majority of the class, the matchup with the Bulldogs will be the final time the group gets to put on the red and blue together. Auburn’s Newton takes his game to a new level
Just how good is Auburn quarterback Cam Newton? That was the question that Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix attempted to answer prior to the Rebels’ game with the No. 3 Tigers at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The plan heading into the contest was to stop Newton from running, from beating the Rebels with his legs like he has so many other teams this year.
Nix’s plan worked as the Rebels held Newton to 45 yards on 11 carries and no touchdowns. But Newton was effective in a lot of other ways for the Tigers, who piled up 51 points and 572 yards, both season highs allowed for the Rebels. (November 1, 2010, Page 1B)
Auburn’s backs run wild in win
The Auburn Tigers have relied on quarterback Cam Newton to supply the majority of their rushing attack for most of the season.
In the No. 3 Tigers’ 51-31 win over Ole Miss on Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, it was the young running back duo of freshman Michael Dyer and sophomore Onterio McCalebb that did the bulk of the work on the ground, rushing for a combined 279 yards and two scores on 30 carries.

Ole Miss’ Ingram back at practice
Ole Miss’ beleaguered defense got some more good news Tuesday with the return of free safety Fon Ingram to practice. A day after senior defensive end Kentrell Lockett said he hoped to play against Tulane on Saturday, Ingram told the media that it was his goal to see his first action of the year against the Green Wave as well.
Rebel coach Houston Nutt said it was great to see Ingram, who missed the last half of summer practice and the Jacksonville State game with knee injury, back on the field. (September 8, 2010, Page 8)
Nutt holds off on QB decision
The announcement everyone has been waiting for will take at least another couple of days.
Following Ole Miss’ practice on Tuesday head coach Houston Nutt said that while he knows who will be getting the nod at quarterback, an extenuating circumstance is preventing him from clarifying publically who will be getting the bulk of the snaps under center. (August 25, 2010, Page 8)
Rebels’ D takes a toll on quarterbacks
Ole Miss’ football practice on Tuesday was one dominated by the defense and the rain. Shortly after the punting and place-kicking work was completed, heavy rain and wind forced the action inside. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said the offense and defense ran 80 plays and did everything but tackle to the ground.
The Rebel defense, led by players such as defensive end Kentrell Lockett, forced several mistakes by quarterbacks Nathan Stanley, Jeremiah Masoli and Randall Mackey during the practice. (August 18, 2010, Page 8)
