A team-first approach to winning basketball games turned out to be very successful for the Oxford Lady Chargers and junior point guard Erika Sisk this season. Not only did OHS win 24 games and advance to the Class 5A North Half tournament under coach Shayne Linzy in his second season, the 5-foot-4 Sisk was able to show her all-around skills better than she has before.
Sisk not only set up her teammates during games, but she was a driving force behind the Lady Chargers’ offense. She led the area with averaging 22.0 points per game and then added to that outstanding scoring ledger by dishing out 4.8 assists and grabbing 3.9 rebounds per game.
Oxford’s planned run in the MHSAA’s Class 5A North Half tournament came to stop before it really got started Friday night at Jackson’s Lanier High School gym. After playing so well against Clarksdale in the opener of the 5A playoffs, the Lady Chargers were unable to duplicate that effort in a 69-57 setback to Callaway. (more…) (February 21, 2011, Page 6)
It wasn’t long after the Oxford Lady Chargers lost to West Point in the Region 2-5A tournament championship last Friday that coach Shayne Linzy was looking forward to Monday’s first round of the 5A playoffs.
Despite Clarksdale’s overall size superiority and playing away from home, Linzy felt like his team would respond in fine fashion and be a very tough team for the Wildcats to have to defeat. His intuition proved to be right as the Lady Chargers used their speed and stamina to knock off last year’s 5A North Half champion, 54-52, in the first step to advancing to Jackson for the MHSAA state tournament. Oxford’s knack for playing its best basketball in the postseason and winning division tournament titles under coach Drew Tyler continued Friday night as the Chargers knocked off West Point 71-61. The win not only secured a 10th championship trophy for Tyler in his 14 years of coaching at OHS, it also ensured a home playoff game Tuesday against Clarksdale a year after the Chargers had to travel to Ridgeland. While it took the girls a quarter and a half to really get going during their 57-35 victory over the New Hope Lady Trojans in the first round of the District 2-5A Tournament, the Chargers took it to Saltillo from the opening tip and turned a 22-point halftime lead into a 75-39 victory.

The most complete effort of the season on both sides of the court led to yet another division title for the Oxford Chargers Friday afternoon in the regular season finale against West Point.
Oxford’s 68-49 win over West Point gave the team another regular season title and more importantly earned them the No. 1 seed in this week’s Division 2-5A tournament that begins Tuesday at West Point. The Lady Chargers also played well in their regular season finale, defeating West Point 60-57 to finish 6-0 in the division and also earn the No. 1 seed in the tournament. (February 7, 2011, Page 3B)
