Lady Chargers get defensive in win

JACKSON — Defensive adjustments have been a big key to success for the Oxford Lady Chargers this season on the basketball court. Tuesday afternoon, in the team’s biggest game of the season, it was a defensive adjustment made at halftime that ended up advancing the Lady Chargers to the MHSAA’s Class 5A state championship game on Saturday. (February 29, 2012, Page 6)

Oxford captures 5A North Half title

A season that was started with great promise and expectations continued to deliver on all accounts for the Oxford Lady Chargers and their fans Saturday night in the OHS gym. A night after defeating Canton 63-49 to advance to Jackson for the MHSAA state tournament for the first time since 2005, the Lady Chargers defeated Center Hill 51-48 to win the 5A North Half title.

Oxford takes apart Callaway in 5A opener

Erika Sisk couldn’t wait to hit the court Monday night against Callaway. Oxford’s senior point guard said she woke up at 4:30 in the morning in anticipation of the MHSAA Class 5A playoff matchup in the OHS gym.

Sisk, along with her teammates, showed no signs of fatigue as the Lady Chargers easily defeated Callaway 79-63 to advance to this weekend’s North Half tournament that will be played in the OHS gym. (February 14, 2012, Page 8)

Lady Chargers capture Division 2-5A title

One of the Oxford Lady Chargers’ preseason goals was to capture the Division 2-5A Tournament title. Despite a second straight regular season title and a perfect overall record to be proud of, the victory the Lady Chargers wanted most came Friday with an 83-52 triumph over West Point in the 2-5A title game. Different styles produce wins for OHS

Both Oxford High basketball squads secured a spot in the MHSAA Class 5A Playoffs next week and a spot in the Division 2-5A championship games with wins over Saltillo at the OHS gym Tuesday night.
The similarities to the two teams’ victories stop there though, as the Lady Chargers cruised to an 83-35 win and the Chargers had to fight off a late run by the Tigers to win 62-55. (February 8, 2012, Page 6)

OHS locks up Region 2-5A titles

Region championships are something the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers are used to winning, so Friday’s accomplishments are no surprise.

Both teams earned regular-season Region 2-5A crowns Friday night with wins over New Hope on the road before returning home to sweep Amory in the OHS gym Saturday. (more…) (January 30, 2012)

Oxford sweeps Saltillo in hoops action

Oxford’s varsity basketball teams earned two region wins over Saltillo on Tuesday night. The Lady Chargers remained undefeated and grabbed a share of the regular season region title with a 91-49 win over the Lady Tigers. Oxford’s boys improved to 17-7 overall and 4-1 in the region thanks to a 67-48 win. Erika Sisk led the Lady Chargers with a 27 points and eight steals. (more…) (January 26, 2012, Page 7)

Oxford teams earn sweep of West Point

Oxford’s girls remained perfect in region play and overall as the Lady Chargers defeated West Point at home Friday night and Scott Central on Saturday in the Mid-Mississippi Challenge held in Ackerman. The Lady Chargers topped West Point 81-37 and then defeated Scott Central 81-49.

Oxford’s boys also continued to roll in region play as the Chargers defeated West Point 90-63. The Chargers then took Starkville’s spot in the annual Hotbed Classic hosted by New Albany on short notice and fell to Booneville 63-50. (more…) (January 23, 2012, Page 2B)

Oxford earns road wins over LHS

Tuesday’s nightcap involving the Oxford Chargers and Lafayette Commodores literally came down to one play. In a game that was as emotionally charged as any recent contest between Lafayette and Oxford on the basketball court, it was the Chargers who got the better of the Commodores in a 55-53 win in the LHS gym.
