Lady Devils fall on Day 1 of Water Valley Classic

WATER VALLEY — Up against a bigger, more mature Charleston team, Water Valley girl’s basketball coach Jason Purdy knew his youthful squad had its work cut out for it.
Purdy was right.

Byhalia no match for Lady Blue Devils

WATER VALLEY — Led by a balanced offensive attack, the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils had little trouble defeating the Byhalia Lady Indians on Thursday.

Water Valley remained unbeaten in District 2-3A play (3-0) by knocking off Byhalia 11-1 in five innings. The Lady Blue Devils left five runners in scoring position in the first three innings, so they could have ended the game even earlier, but coach Clint Faust seemed pleased with the overall production and the 13 hits his group collected. (March 30, 2012, Page 9A)

Lady Blue Devils defeat Oxford

Water Valley’s fast start on the softball diamond led to a 15-2 win over Oxford on Tuesday night in Water Valley. The Lady Blue Devils scored five runs in the first inning and added a run in each of the next three innings in their five-inning win. WVHS finished with 15 hits in the victory and was aided by four OHS errors. Tonya Phillips led the Lady Blue Devils with three hits in the contest. Haley Vance, Shade Epes, Mallory Washington, Erica Rice and A.K. Burns each had two hits. Vance led WVHS with four RBIs, Taylor Epes earned the win as she finished with four strikeouts Water Valley returns to action Friday at Independence at 5 pm. while the Lady Chargers play a doubleheader at Calhoun City on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. (March 21, 2012, Page 6)

WVHS win leaves Sherman speechless

ABERDEEN — It’s not often that John Sherman, Water Valley’s veteran boys basketball coach, is at a loss of words following a game. But after watching his Blue Devils rally from a seven-point deficit in the final three minutes of play, on the road against an opponent that clearly had the upper hand, even Sherman had to stop and collect his thoughts about how Water Valley topped Mantachie 64-57. (February 8, 2012, Page 8)

Coffeeville claims rivalry sweep

COFFEEVILLE — Turnovers were at the forefront of Water Valley’s doubleheader loss at county rival Coffeeville on Friday.

Better second half not enough for WV boys

WATER VALLEY — It was a tale of two halves on the court for the Water Valley Blue Devils Monday night. In the first half of the varsity basketball nightcap in the WVHS gym, Hickory Flat controlled the tempo, the backboards and made more hustle plays to garner a 34-18 lead at the half.

Things were different in the second half for the Blue Devils, and while they ended up losing 61-46, coach John Sherman was more pleased with how his team competed in the second half against the Rebels (8-6 overall). (December 13, 2011, Page 6)

Lady Blue Devils have a new look for 2011-12 campaign

In years past Water Valley’s girls hoops squad has had one play that stood out above all else: Get the ball to Ashley Phillips. Let her go the length of the floor and either look to shoot or drive and set up one of her teammates locked and loaded to shoot a jumper.

Water Valley’s rally falls short

NETTLETON — The Lady Blue Devils’ rally was too little, too late on Thursday evening at James Malone Field.

After falling behind early, the Water Valley softball team was unable recover in time before eventually losing to the Nettleton Lady Tigers 6-1 in Game 1 of the second round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs. (more…) (May 6, 2011, Page 8A)
