Gooch shows knack for finding the end zone
Lafayette’s Anfernee Gooch has been overshadowed for much of the 2010 season by workhorses Jeremy Liggins and Demarkus Dennis.
That may have played a factor in Gooch’s breakout performance on Friday that earned him his second EAGLE Player of the Week honor.
Against the Millington Central Trojans, Gooch caught four passes and converted each into touchdown scores of 9, 55, 59 and 45 yards. (October 19, 2010, Page 8)
Defense, special teams lift WVHS past Cougars

Water Valley expecting to get best effort from Nettleton on Friday
Brad Embry wants to make it clear that the Nettleton Wildcats squad that Water Valley (5-1 overall) will face on Friday is not going to be the same team that lost to Bruce 43-13 last week, nor the team that opened the season 0-2 after losing to Amory and North Pontotoc.
Instead, Embry said he expects Friday’s showdown in Nettleton to be a “knock-down, drag-out” for the Region 2-3A opponents. (September 30, 2010, Page 8)
Blue Devils roll Wildcats on the road
A more reserved, business-like approach proved to be the key to earning a win for the Water Valley Blue Devils in their final non region game of the season Friday night. Instead of the swagger and attitude that the team displays at the start of each game each week, the Blue Devils executed at a more subdued, methodical pace in their 33-6 win over Independence. Instead of hitting the gas early in the game, the Blue Devils found themselves hitting the accelerator more as the game wore on.
The main reason for a little less passion resided in the fact that two energetic starters on defense, Eric Buckley and Chris Conard, were held out for injury and illness. For junior linebacker C.J. Langham makes a difference for Devils
The improvements made on offense by the Water Valley Blue Devils so far this year can be credited to several different players. From quarterback E.J. Bounds to running backs Torrey Horton, Zenty Allen and Eric Buckley to the offensive line as a whole, there are a lot of reasons why the Blue Devils have made tremendous strides as an offense. Blue Devils hold on to top Vikings
A convincing 21-point halftime lead wasn’t enough on Friday for the Water Valley Blue Devils.

WATER VALLEY— The Blue Devils lopsided 41-14 victory over the J.Z. George Jaguars at Bobby Clark Field on Friday will be a Homecoming night few fans will forget.

Lafayette’s Tyson earns POW award
Other players may have had more yards and tackles, but no player made a bigger play over the weekend than Lafayette defensive end Keeyon Tyson.
With the Oxford Chargers marching down the field late in the fourth quarter, Tyson broke around the Oxford offensive line and was able to punch the ball away from Chargers quarterback Guy Cameron Billups.
Fellow Commodore Kris Miller fell on the ball and Lafayette’s 21-14 victory was secured. (September 7, 2010, Page 6)
Jennings’ late strike sinks Devils
The Water Valley defense did it’s best on Friday night to come away from Calhoun City’s “Boneyard” with a victory, holding a prolific offense that had averaged 47.5 points to just 10 points.
It wasn’t enough in the end, however, as the Wildcats were able to score a go-ahead touchdown late in the third quarter and hold on for a 10-7 victory.
“The simple answer to the night is we just have to get better on offense,” WVHS coach Brad Embry said. “That’s all I told the kids. It was a great effort, a championship effort against a championship-caliber team, but offensively we have to get better.
