OM Rebels look to play better at No. 1 Alabama

The start of Southeastern Conference play for Ole Miss begins Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium, home to the league’s best team in No. 1 Alabama. Two weeks after losing 66-31 to then No. 14 Texas, the Rebels have a chance to show the nation watching at home via ESPN that they have improved from that defeat and that they are more prepared to run the gauntlet against the nation’s best teams. Rebels looking to build depth along OL

Heading into preseason camp, new offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator Matt Luke made it a goal of his to give every player a clean slate.
The former Ole Miss center felt it wasn’t fair to judge his players abilities strictly on what they accomplished with the former coaching staff. (August 17, 2012, Page 6A)

Rebels show pro, cons in first scrimmage

Saturday’s scrimmage at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium provided a mixed bag of results for the Ole Miss coaching staff to build on.

There was the good: Randall Mackey showed consistency passing the ball, the defense provided a constant presence in the offensive backfield, the tight ends looked like reliable targets, head coach Houston Nutt said he liked the attitudes he saw from the defense and incumbent kicker Bryson Rose connected on all four field goals from 40 yards and beyond. More focus needed for Rebels to make a turnaround

Focus and leaning on a few seniors are two of the many ways Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt was planning on turning around the Rebels’ fortunes Saturday night when they host Fresno State at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

A 1-2 start to the season, against teams that are not the best on the Rebels’ schedule, is not what Nutt and his staff anticipated in preseason.

But instead of dwelling on the slow start and feeling sorry about where the team is, Nutt said the only medicine is to get back to work and ultimately earn a win. (September 21, 2010, Page 6)

Nutt says team needs to make more plays

Sunday was a day of heavy evaluation for Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt and his staff. Besides getting back to the practice field to correct things physically, Nutt was able to talk about Saturday’s 49-48 loss to Jacksonville State in double overtime a little better after watching the tape.

“I thought we played a very good first half of football. The second half of the third quarter and fourth quarter was not good. We’ve got to be better, we’ve got to be better with our eyes, assignments, tackling, the whole bit,” Nutt said. “We did not play well, we didn’t make plays on the ball and along with that you can’t turn the ball over. We felt the momentum slipping away as the game went into the fourth quarter and we had a real lull offensively as well. We had some turnovers at critical times that really hurt us.” (September 6, 2010, Page 3B)

Weight loss crucial for Washington’s future success

The majority of Ole Miss’ spring football practices can be summed up in two words — dominant defense.

Lately, however, the offense has been fighting back.

If the offensive line is going to continue to progress, it’s going to need junior left guard Alex “Tank” Washington to fill in for some of the departed veterans.

More specifically, though, it’s going to need Washington, who currently tips the scale at 350 pounds, to shed some weight. (April 13, 2010, Page 2B)
