Chargers show character in latest title win

If there was ever a match that showcased Oxford’s versatility and character as a team during their successive championship seasons it was Monday’s 5-2 win over West Jones.
The Chargers won their third straight state championship at the Ridgeland Tennis Center by using their depth and an immense amount of moxie to take down the Mustangs (14-5 overall). (May 11, 2010, Page 8)

Chargers beat West Jones to capture Class 5A title

Oxford’s dominance on the tennis court continued this morning as the Chargers won their third-straight state championship. The Chargers’ latest victim in a winning streak that has now reached 107 matches was West Jones, which defeated Brookhaven 5-2 in the South Half title match.

Oxford, which won the last two titles in Class 4A, defeated the Mustangs 5-1 in a match that lasted just over an hour at the Ridgeland Tennis Center to claim the Class 5A title. (May 10, 2010, Page 1B)

Chargers dominate Titans to win title

Oxford TennisOxford moved a step closer to its third straight state title in tennis with an efficiently dominant 7-0 win over Ridgeland Thursday at Avent Park.

The Chargers (19-0 overall) latest victory earned them their first Class 5A North Half championship pennant and set up one half of Monday’s title match which will be played at 9 a.m. at the Ridgeland Tennis Center against either Brookhaven or West Jones.

In a match that was decided in half the amount of the time it took the Titans (14-6) to reach Avent Park, the focused Chargers wanted to leave no doubt who was the better team on the court. (May 7, 2010, Page 6A)

Chargers confident about chances

Oxford’s run to win a third straight state championship in tennis continues Thursday against a school where the state title match will be played in less than a week.

Ridgeland will be the Chargers’ latest opponent to play in the Class 5A playoffs and Thursday’s match, which begins at 2 p.m., will determine who advances to represent the North in Monday’s 5A state title match. (May 5, 2010, Page 9)

OHS makes quick work of NCHS

Oxford rolled through the first round of the Class 5A playoffs, their first in the new classification, with a 4-0 win over Neshoba Central on Friday. Three matches were in progress when things were called because of inclement weather. (April 26, 2010, Page 3B)

OHS makes clean sweep at 1-5A tennis tournament

The Oxford tennis team took its dominance to the Division 1-5A Tournament held at Itawamba Community College on Tuesday, sweeping the competition by going 16-0 in two rounds of matches. In fact, the Chargers combined to only drop nine points combined. (April 21, 2010, Page 8)

Chargers post successful weekend with three wins

Oxford’s trip to Alcorn County over the weekend produced three one-sided tennis wins.

The Chargers improved their record to 16-0 overall as a team heading into the Class 5A playoffs this week by defeating Tishomingo County, Corinth and Alcorn Central. All of the matches were won by the scores of 7-0. (April 19, 2010, Page 3B)

OHS winning streak reaches 100

Oxford’s 100th-straight win as a team Thursday turned out to be a piece of cake, literally.
Surrounded by parents and supporters, the Chargers celebrated their milestone win in style at Avent Park by partaking in some cake in a celebration that signified their most recent accomplishment.

Oxford’s 6-0 win over West Point may have been one of the team’s easiest in the streak that started the third match of the 2004 season, but for the seniors who helped earn the victory, it still meant a whole lot. (April 16, 2010, Page 7a)

Oxford tennis team tops New Hope 7-0

Oxford remained undefeated on the season and in Division 2-5A play Tuesday with a 7-0 win over New Hope. OHS won three matches without yielding a point, including the boys singles match won 6-0, 6-0 by Zach Wilder. (April 7, 2010, Page 7)

Oxford tennis sweeps Lafayette
