CHARLESTON — Water Valley’s first big test of the 2012 season produced some positive results but the final result wasn’t what coach Brad Embry and his staff were hoping for in the end.
Charleston, the defending MHSAA Class 3A state champions, delivered the Blue Devils their first loss of the season with a 35-21 triumph at Tiger Stadium on Friday night. Water Valley (4-1) had some shining moments in the contest, especially in the first half, but not enough to garner the win. (more…) (September 17, 2012, Page 2B)

Oxford’s defenders must have felt hot following the Chargers’ 19-0 win over Lafayette in the annual Crosstown Classic. In a game that was dominated by the Chargers from start to finish, the OHS defense shined the brightest in a victory that not only ended a six-game losing streak to the Commodores, but also ended Lafayette’s 34-game winning streak.
It was an effort that won’t be forgotten by anyone associated with OHS for a long time. It was an effort — by all 11 starters and numerous backups — that garnered the unit this week’s Player of the Week honors.
Oxford defensive coordinator Steve Herring was beyond pleased with the effort his players gave in the victory and said hustling was the key to it all. (September 4, 2012, Page 8)
CALHOUN CITY — The Water Valley Blue Devils grew considerably as a team in their latest game with the Calhoun City Wildcats on Friday night. Instead of losing another heartbreaker to CCHS like Water Valley has the past two years, the Blue Devils defeated the Wildcats 38-21 on the road. The victory not only improved WVHS to 3-0 on the year, but it showed the rest of Class 3A — and head coach Brad Embry — that the program has taken another step toward building a championship team and program. Football is not supposed to look this easy for Oxford’s Nick Brown. After spending the bulk of his high school career playing for hoops coach Drew Tyler, the 5-foot-10, 155-pound Brown decided to play football this past spring. From the first day he hit the field, wide receivers coach Chris Cutcliffe was impressed by his latest recruit. (August 28, 2012, Page 6)
The visitors in blue and white found the end zone three unanswered times to open the 49-13 victory and never allowed the Pirates to get within 14 points. (August 27, 2012, Page 1B)
