Commodores earn big victory over Batesville

Lafayette’s eighth-grade football team took a huge step to securing the Tri-Lakes Conference title Tuesday by posting a 30-14 win over Batesville at William L. Buford Stadium. The victory improved the Commodores to 5-2 overall and an even more important 3-0 in the conference with one game left to play against Grenada. The Commodores were never threatened by the Tigers in the game as Atarius Owens got them on the scoreboard first with a 16-yard run at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter. LMS, OMS split final meeting

The second meeting between Oxford and Lafayette on the gridiron meant a lot more than the earlier showdown. Tuesday’s doubleheader at William L. Buford Stadium not only counted in the team’s overall record, but also towards the Tri-Lakes Confernce standings.

Oxford’s seventh-grade Chargers remained perfect on the year with a 22-6 win over Lafayette, while the Commodores gave the Chargers their first loss of the season in the eighth-grade game with a 14-12 triumph. (October 10, 2012, Page 7)
