Power-hitting King continues NWCC pipeline

WATER VALLEY — Taylor King has gained a reputation as a power-hitting corner infielder with the Water Valley Blue Devils during his time on the varsity squad.

Barber’s focus, talent leads to Player of Year award

A focused approach that started this past summer made Oxford High baseball player Zac Barber the most important player on the field for the Chargers this season.

For a team that had several good high school players on the roster but nobody that was headed to play at the Division I level next season, Barber was able to carry the Chargers to an unexpected 19-12 overall record and a spot in the Class 5A North Half title series. (more…) (June 2, 2011, Page 1B)

McCullough, Mills on All-State teams

Successful seasons on the baseball diamond has led to more accolades for a pair of cousins. Lafayette’s Josh Mills and Water Valley’s Walt McCullough were named to Coaches All-State baseball teams on Tuesday.

Mills, who helped lead the Commodores to a 23-7 overall mark in 2011 and the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, was named to the first team in 4A, while McCullough, who helped lead the Blue Devils to an 18-11 mark and a third-round appearance in the 3A playoffs, was also named to the first team in 3A. WVHS prepared to face Troopers

The wait is over and Water Valley finally has an opponent for its third round matchup in the Class 3A playoffs.

Blue Devils power their way into third round of 3A playoffs

Whoever faces the Water Valley Blue Devils in the next round of the MHSAA Class 3A baseball playoffs take warning: You’re going to need a bigger boat.

Paced by a potent offensive attack, the Blue Devils defeated the Kossuth Aggies 10-8 Friday night at Kossuth and went on to sweep the series Saturday with a 10-3 win at Blue Devil Field to advance to the third round. A week of waiting to find out who the Water Valley Blue Devils would play in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs was answered Monday morning. After deliberations with the MHSAA over the weekend failed to produce an opponent, word came mid-morning that Leflore County would be the No. 3 seed to play the Blue Devils.
