FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A change at quarterback proved to be just what Ole Miss needed to spark its dormant offense.
Randall Mackey delivered the big plays all night on offense and Jeff Scott ran for 138 yards and two second-half touchdowns to lead the Rebels to a 38-28 victory against Fresno State on Saturday night. (more…) (October 3, 2011, Page 1B)
The effort was there Saturday for the Ole Miss Rebels compared to their Week 3 performance against Vanderbilt. Unfortunately for them and coach Houston Nutt, the results of that improved effort weren’t enough to produce a win.
Ole Miss fell to 0-2 in the Southeastern Conference thanks to a 27-13 setback at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs. What the crowd of 58,042 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, and a regional audience watching on the SEC Network, saw was a young Ole Miss team show more fight than it did against the Commodores, but come up short on the scoreboard because of the same miscues that have haunted them all year. After watching the Rebels turn the ball over five times, commit six penalties for 51 yards and only convert four of 14 third-down conversions, there wasn’t much Nutt could say about Saturday’s display of inept passing, running, blocking, catching and play calling other than it was bad.
