While news of freshman cornerback Senquez Golson negotiating with the Boston Red Sox dominated discussion following Ole Miss’ first scrimmage of the preseason, there was actually football played at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The quarterbacks have had an up and down week of practice and didn’t buck that trend on Saturday.
Of the three vying for the starting job, only Zack Stoudt threw a touchdown pass (a 25-yard pass to freshman receiver Donte Moncrief in single coverage).

Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt was visibly excited to talk about the start of the 2011 season on Thursday. One of the main reasons for his upbeat attitude revolves around his strong group of freshmen and newcomers that officially reported to campus for the start of summer drills that begin on Saturday.
With the exception of two newcomers — defensive back Denzel Nkemdiche and defensive end Kameron Wood — the remaining members of the class were ready to start work Nutt said.
A third signee, Taylorsville standout linebacker Marcus Mayers, did not qualify academically. (August 5, 2011, Page 8A)
Ole Miss junior wide receiver Ja-Mes Logan said he and the rest of the team’s receivers have something to prove heading into the 2011 season. In a year where there is no proven No. 1 receiver for a quarterback to throw to, Logan is hoping that he can fill that role sooner rather than later for the Rebels. (June 27, 2011, Page 7)
COLUMN: Ole Miss signed a bevy of talented football players from the state of Mississippi this past February. One of those talented players was Raleigh wide receiver Donte Moncrief, who has been preparing for the upcoming season at Ole Miss by competing in the long jump for his high school. A year of hard work on the recruiting trail ended up paying off for Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt and his staff Wednesday on National Signing Day. Following a year where the Rebels went 4-8 on the field, Nutt was able to land his best class of freshmen and newcomers since he arrived in Oxford from Arkansas. (more…) (February 3, 2011, Page 6)
