Rebels finish up spring with overtime thriller
Hugh Freeze knew his first spring game as Ole Miss’ football coach couldn’t end in a tie. Instead of the annual BancorpSouth Grove Bowl ending in a 17-17 deadlock Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Freeze gave each squad a chance to score in an overtime setting. (more…) (April 23, 2012, Page 1B)
It’s easy to see where things went wrong
COLUMN: It’s still hard to believe that Houston Nutt is out as Ole Miss’ football coach less than four years after he arrived in Oxford.
This was a man who filled up the Gertrude Ford Performing Arts Center on campus to hold his introductory press conference with media and fans. This was a man who could have been elected mayor after leading the Rebels to back-to-back Cotton Bowl wins in his first two seasons. He was the choice of so many fans when he was hired. Rebs’ Rose remains perfect
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Alabama coach Nick Saban has to be wishing late season trades were available in the college game like they are in the NFL.
If they were, it’s hard not to think he wouldn’t come after Ole Miss junior Bryson Rose, who is the hottest kicker in the college game.
Ole Miss may not be producing a lot positive results on the field this season, but the native of Raleigh, N.C., has been completely the opposite. He continued his exceptional season by making two more field goals Saturday against Kentucky at Commonwealth Stadium. (more…) (November 7, 2011, Page 1B)
Mistakes hurt Rebels in loss to Wildcats
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Ole Miss’ 2011 football season went from bad to worse Saturday afternoon thanks to another second-half letdown that led to a 30-13 win for the Kentucky Wildcats at Commonwealth Stadium.
In a game where the Rebels (2-7 overall, 0-6 in the Southeastern Conference) finally scored in the third quarter, and actually had a lead heading into the fourth, mistakes made in the final quarter proved costly. Ole Miss was outscored 20-0 in the fourth and after totaling 314 yards of offense in the first three quarters, the Rebels were held to just 78 yards the rest of the way. Freshman WR Moncrief seeing more chemistry on offense
The Ole Miss Rebels have been searching for rhythm on offense all season long. Against No. 10 Arkansas this past Saturday, the Rebels were at their best against a quality opponent as they totaled 370 yards.
Quarterback Randall Mackey threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns while the running game ended up producing 151.
Freshman wide receiver Donte Moncrief, who caught both of Mackey’s touchdowns against the Razorbacks, talked about the improved chemistry with his quarterback, especially on deeper routes. (October 26, 2011, Page 2B)
Nutt wants to see his Rebels finish games next
Finish was the word Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt used several times during his weekly press conference Monday to describe the next step in the development of his young team. The Rebels played inspired football for a half against No. 10 Arkansas, but they were unable to hold on to a 17-0 lead and ultimately saw another opportunity for a win slip away.
