Representatives from Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi asked both local governing boards Tuesday to amend an agreement that a new $250 million hospital will be build within the city limits to allow Baptist to build on property that is both inside and outside of the city which is located between Old Taylor Road and South Lamar, not far from the existing hospital. After rumors had circled around Oxford for the past week about Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi buying land west of Oxford for its proposed regional referral center, Dick Cowart, counsel for Baptist, laid the rumors to rest during the meeting between Baptist officials, the Oxford Board of Aldermen and Lafayette County supervisors, and confirmed Baptist had purchased 107 acres, however, said Baptist has not selected a site as of yet. In a surprise move, the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors voted Monday at an informational public hearing to move forward with negotiations with officials from Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi on the medical center’s plans to build a new $300 million facility in Oxford.
After an hour-plus presentation by Dick Cowart, legal counsel for Baptist, and a round of questions from the standing-room-only audience, Supervisor Mike Pickens made a motion to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the hospital to allow the hospital corporation to buy out of the original lease it had with the city of Oxford and Lafayette County for about $60 million.
