Several Blue Devils make MAC 3A Team
Several Water Valley Blue Devils were honored on Wednesday for their standout play on the football field.
Included on the 2010 Mississippi Association of Coaches’ Class 3A All-State Team were first teamers, linebacker J.D. Fondon, safety/running back Eric Buckley and long snapper Fred McGee. Cornerback/receiver Chris Conard was named to the second team, while linebacker C.J. Jackson, lineman Tommy Lipscomb and punter John Michael Grimmett were named as honorable mentions. Water Valley looking forward to facing Winona Tigers
The manner in which Water Valley defensive coordinator Richard Russo answered the phone on Tuesday pretty much sums up the Water Valley Blue Devils’ attitude regarding its game with region 2-3A foe Winona on Friday in the third round of the Class 3A playoffs. (November 18, 2010, Page 7)
Ruleville Central no match for Blue Devils second round matchup
The Water Valley Blue Devils continued their playoff success with a convincing road victory over the Ruleville Tigers 31-0 in the second round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs. (November 15, 2010, Page 6B)
Lafayette’s Gooch earns POW award
Friday’s outstanding all-around performance for Lafayette’s Anfernee Gooch at Center Hill almost didn’t happen. Instead of racking up 177 yards receiving and an additional 93 yards through the return game, Gooch almost didn’t play because of a car wreck he was involved in the night before.
LHS coach Anthony Hart remembers Gooch telling him that he didn’t think he would play Friday night. Hart was preparing to move to Plan B when the senior was convinced that playing would not only be his best option, but the best option for the Commodores as well. (September 21, 2010, Page 6)
Wrecking Crew’s swagger tough to match
During Water Valley’s preseason game against Vardaman, a message was sent to opposing teams — look out.
To say the Blue Devils have a mean streak might be an understatement; junior cornerback Chris Conard made that blatantly clear during Water Valley’s preseason game against Vardaman when he came downhill on a kickoff and knocked out a 270-pound player, literally.
It’s that kind of take-no-prisoners attitude that is expected to be on display all season. (August 27, 2010, Page 6A)
‘Wrecking Crew’ shuts down VHS
Friday night’s matchup with Vardaman at Bobby Clark Field may just have been a jamboree, but the Water Valley Blue Devils didn’t play like it was just a scrimmage.
There was no going through the motions for the Blue Devils, who quickly put their stamp on the Rams with a display of swagger not seen from the team in quite some time. (August 16, 2010, Page 8)
Bounds to receive plenty of help on offense
Helping to make freshman quarterback E.J. Bounds’ life a lot easier this season will be the likes of Desmond Hervey and Chris Conard at receiver.
Both juniors are expected to step up on offense and assume larger roles this season.
Last season, Hervey caught just two passes for six yards, while Conard hauled in five for 98 yards and three scores.
But if this past weekend is any indication of how the season will play out, both Hervey and Conard could factor greatly into the team’s passing attack. (July 12, 2010, Page 7)
