That wasn’t the case on Tuesday night, as the Chargers completed Oxford’s sweep of Clarksdale by defeating the Wildcats 63-57 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. While it took the girls a quarter and a half to really get going during their 57-35 victory over the New Hope Lady Trojans in the first round of the District 2-5A Tournament, the Chargers took it to Saltillo from the opening tip and turned a 22-point halftime lead into a 75-39 victory.

A trio of Oxford Chargers football players are set to visit the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns this weekend. Verbal commits DeShaun McNeal and Larry Pettis are expected to be joined by teammate Guy Cameron Billups on the trip. The Chargers and Lady Chargers opened District 1-5A play on a good note with a sweep of New Hope on the road Friday night. The Chargers beat New Hope 81-61 thanks to 32 points from Justin Fondren. One of the most successful seasons on the gridiron the past few seasons for the Oxford Chargers ended with a disappointing 27-12 loss to the West Point Green Wave in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field.

Longtime coaching rivals Johnny Hill of Oxford and Anthony Jenkins of Hernando played another chess match Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field and, in the end, it was Hill’s Chargers that made more right moves in a 31-19 victory.
Oxford scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to jump ahead to stay and added two more scores in the final period to turn back a rally by the visiting Tigers in the game that carried postseason playoff implications.
