Chargers show great effort in playoff win

The Oxford Chargers haven’t always put forth complete efforts this season. Some nights, their defense was lacking, or they would get beat on the boards because of lackluster effort.

That wasn’t the case on Tuesday night, as the Chargers completed Oxford’s sweep of Clarksdale by defeating the Wildcats 63-57 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. The win advances the Chargers (17-10 overall) to the 5A North Half tournament Friday at Indianola-Gentry, a feat the team did not accomplish last season. (February 16, 2011, Page 6)

Oxford boys, girls cruise in Round 1

The Oxford boys and girls basketball teams could not have gotten their postseasons started much better than they did on Tuesday at the West Point gym.

While it took the girls a quarter and a half to really get going during their 57-35 victory over the New Hope Lady Trojans in the first round of the District 2-5A Tournament, the Chargers took it to Saltillo from the opening tip and turned a 22-point halftime lead into a 75-39 victory.

Both Oxford squads were No. 1 seeds. (February 9, 2011, Page 9)

Chargers’ complete effort leads to title

The most complete effort of the season on both sides of the court led to yet another division title for the Oxford Chargers Friday afternoon in the regular season finale against West Point.

Oxford’s 68-49 win over West Point gave the team another regular season title and more importantly earned them the No. 1 seed in this week’s Division 2-5A tournament that begins Tuesday at West Point. The Lady Chargers also played well in their regular season finale, defeating West Point 60-57 to finish 6-0 in the division and also earn the No. 1 seed in the tournament. (February 7, 2011, Page 3B)

Buckley finds home with Ragin’ Cajuns

Eric Buckley had an idea last weekend might be a memorable one when he left Water Valley for Lafayette, La. on Friday.

Once he made the six-hour trek south, heard the sales pitch of the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns and saw all that Lafayette, La., had to offer, Buckley knew he had found the right fit and gave his verbal commitment to the coaching staff on Saturday. (January 31, 2011, Page 7)
