On top again: ‘Dores take wind out of Tornadoes

JACKSON — About 30 seconds after Lafayette wrapped up its second straight MHSAA Class 4A state title at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, head coach Anthony Hart embraced his youngest son Derek with a huge bear hug.

Lafayette has four named All-State

Lafayette senior Derek Hart ended a successful cross-country career on a high note Saturday when he earned  All-State recognition in Class 4A after finishing ninth at the MHSAA State Meet held at Choctaw Trails in Clinton.

Hart looking to finish career on top

Cross-country running is more than just a sport to Lafayette senior Derek Hart. It has become a way of life, a sport that has not only served as his as biggest challenge physically and mentally, but also brought him closer together to his family in the process.

As challenging and grueling as the sport is, Hart talked about how fast his entire career has flown by as he prepares for his final run in an LHS uniform at Saturday’s MHSAA Class 4A state meet. (November 3, 2011, Page 8)

LHS teams finish second in Division 1-4A meet

CORINTH — Lafayette’s girls and boys cross country teams finished second in the Division 1-4A meet held Saturday at the Crossroads Regional Park.

Lafayette girls place second at Class 4A state meet

The Lafayette cross country team closed its season on a high note over the weekend as the girls placed second and the boys took sixth-place in the Class 4A State Cross Country Meet held at Choctaw Trails in Clinton.

For the girls, Pontotoc placed first with 35 points, while the Lady Commodores earned 52 points.

Leading the girls squad was ninth grader Esmeralda Rodriguez, who placed sixth with a time of 16 minutes, 39 seconds. Other notable finishers for the girls on the 4K course were: Manon Mullen (7th, 16:40), Rachel Starnes (8th, 16:41), Mariah Buford (11th, 17:19), Corey Hollis (17th, 17:19.5), Peyton Hamann (31st, 18:22) and Teierah Campbell (61st, 20:15). (November 8, 2010, Page 6B)

LHS dominates in latest meet action

Dominating. That’s what the Lafayette High girls and boys cross country teams were Saturday in a district tri-meet hosted at Center Hill.

The Lady Commodores recorded a perfect score as they won the first five slots. Lafayette’s boys also won the meet as they finished with 33 points.

Esmeralda Rodriguez led the Lady Commodores as she finished first on the two-mile course with a time of 12 minutes, 54 seconds. Manon Mullen followed Rodriguez in second place, Rachel Starnes was third, Mariah Buford was fourth while Peyton Hamann rounded out the top five runners with a 13:54. (October 25, 2010, Page 4B)

Rodriguez leads Lafayette at Corinth Invitational

Paced by an outstanding individual effort from Esmeralda Rodriquez, the Lafayette cross country teams fared well in the Corinth Cross Country Invitational.

Rodriguez led the Lady Commodores to a third-place finish. Twenty five teams from all classifications in the state competed in the meet. Saltillo took first in the meet, while Pontotoc was second. (October 21, 2010, Page 9)

Lafayette teams compete in Blue Mountain Invitational

Lafayette’s junior varsity boys cross country teams paced the results in the Blue Mountain Invitational. The junior boys set a school record for low score by placing second in the junior division with 57 points. Lafayette finished second to Saltillo in the meet, who won with 44 points. (September 27, 2010, Page 3B)

LHS teams compete in Saltillo Invitational

Lafayette’s varsity girls cross country team finished fourth in Saturday’s Saltillo Meet. Esmeralda Rodriguez led the team with an eighth-place finish on the 4K course with a time of 17 minutes, 25 seconds. Manon Mullen was 17th with a time of 17:59. Mariah Buford and Corey Hollis finished 27th and 28th respectively, while Teierah Campbell was 52nd overall. (September 20, 2010, Page 4B)
