Democrats across Mississippi gearing up for county conventions

Following the successful precinct caucuses that took place last month on Feb. 23, Democrats across all 82 counties in Mississippi are now preparing for the County Conventions.

Scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, in each county, Mississippi Democrats will elect delegates who will represent them in the county conventions later that day.

In Lafayette County, the convention will be held at the Lafayette County Courthouse.

At the March 23 county conventions, these delegates will play a key role in selecting their county’s Democratic executive committees – the individuals who will lead the county party for the next four years.

“We hope you will join us this Saturday and help us build a stronger Democratic party for Mississippi during this crucial presidential election year,” said Lafayette County Dems chair, Cristen Hemmins. “Now is not the time to sit on the sidelines.”

The county conventions will also determine delegates for the congressional district and state conventions. These conventions will, in turn, elect the state Democratic executive committee for a four-year term, as well as delegates to the Democratic National Convention and two representatives to the Democratic National Committee.

Andre Wagner, Executive Director of the Mississippi Democratic Party, emphasizes the inclusivity of the process.

“We welcome and encourage the participation of every Democrat in the county conventions. The process is completely open to everyone who supports
our party,” he said.

Wagner further highlights outreach efforts, extending invitations to all registered voters and seventeen-year-olds turning eighteen on or before November 5, 2024.

Wagner said committed and hard-working volunteers are needed to serve as precinct leaders, county committee members, and state committee members.

“Our leadership is most effective when it comes from the grassroots,” he said. “Anyone interested in serving as a party leader or a delegate to the national convention should attend their county convention on March 23.”
