Oxford’s Billups wins top award in 5A

Oxford’s success on the football field this season was translated on the Mississippi Association of Coaches Class 5A All-State team that was recently released.

Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups was named Player of the Year after throwing for 2,915 yards and 33 touchdowns for the 9-4 Chargers. Billups ranked second in the entire state in both passing yards and touchdowns thrown.

Joining Billups on the first team offense for the MAC team were senior wide receiver DeShaun McNeal and senior tight end Larry Pettis. Senior offensive lineman Terry Johnson was also named to the second team on offense. Johnson will be playing in Saturday’s Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Classic in Mobile, Ala. (December 10, 2010, Page 6A)

Competition drives Pegues brothers

Two of the most competitive players for Oxford are two of the most enjoyable to be around. Demarius and Demarcus Pegues, a lineman and linebacker for the Chargers, are brothers that have the equal ability to light up a room as easily as they do an opposing ball carrier.

For Oxford coach Johnny Hill, the brothers represent everything he loves about high school football. They are great players, great teammates and great to be around. (September 3, 2010, Page 8A)

Dominant Dennis brothers pace ‘Dores

Lafayette’s football team has always been about family. Throughout the program’s history, family members have been playing for the red and gold in the hopes of carrying on a tradition that has been set years prior.

This year’s group of Commodores is no different as brothers Jamel and Demarkus Dennis support one another on the field in the attempt to make LHS a better team.

Demarkus, the team’s leading running back, and Jamel, the team’s leading tackler at linebacker, have combined to make a formidable tandem for opposing teams to try and slow down each Friday night. (September 3, 2010, Page 9A)

The Oxford Gridiron Chargers took another step forward during Wednesday’s practice, doing hitting drills in pads for the first time.

For the veterans, making solid contact is like riding a bike, it just takes a few reps to get back in the swing of things. (August 5, 2010, Page 7)

Chargers hungry to improve in ’10

Oxford’s first opportunity to improve on last year’s third-place finish in Region 1-5A and move past the first round of the 5A playoffs came Monday with the first official practice of the preseason.

OHS coach Johnny Hill said the team was fired up to be back on the practice fields after a strong summer of workouts. (July 27, 2010, Page 6A)

Oxford track teams capture titles Monday

Two more all-around performances led to two more titles for the Oxford girls and boys track teams Monday at Bobby Holcomb Field. The Chargers won the Region 1-5A meet by scoring 200 points, 83.5 points more than second-place finisher Indianola-Gentry.
