Local players show support for expansion

Tennis players of all ages flooded the steps of the Lafayette County Chancery Building Wednesday afternoon in the form of a peaceful rally to help raise awareness regarding the possibility of expanding the John Leslie Tennis Courts.

The project, which has already been approved by the city, would expand the current facility from eight to 21 courts. The renovation would also include the addition of a pavilion, practice courts, a championship court, new bathroom facilities, additional parking and possibly a pro shop, making it the largest public facility in the state.

While the city has already signed off on the expansion, it’s now the county’s supervisors which must vote to approve the expansion on Sept. 7.

Led by new Lafayette High coach Debbie Swindoll and Oxford coach Louis Nash, the players were armed with signs saying things such as “we need more courts,” “Got Tennis?” and “kids love to play tennis.” (August 26, 2010, Page 6)

Swindoll hired to lead LHS tennis

Lafayette Athletics Director Jeff Nelson knew his new tennis coach, Debbie Swindoll, was a special athlete and intense competitor when he first came in contact with her at a middle school basketball tournament in Pope.

As Nelson prepared to help lead Lafayette’s middle school team to a victory, he saw Swindoll show her skills as a member of Winona’s team and he marveled at how hard Swindoll played the game. It was that drive to be the best coupled with an extensive knowledge in tennis that separated Swindoll from the rest of potential candidates in his search to replace former coach Marty Pearson. It’s also why he was so pleased that his recommendation to hire Swindoll was approved by the Lafayette School Board Tuesday night. (July 7, 2010, Page 6)

OHS winning streak reaches 100

Oxford’s 100th-straight win as a team Thursday turned out to be a piece of cake, literally.
Surrounded by parents and supporters, the Chargers celebrated their milestone win in style at Avent Park by partaking in some cake in a celebration that signified their most recent accomplishment.

Oxford’s 6-0 win over West Point may have been one of the team’s easiest in the streak that started the third match of the 2004 season, but for the seniors who helped earn the victory, it still meant a whole lot. (April 16, 2010, Page 7a)
