Chargers adjusting to time, place for Class 5A quarterfinals

Oxford’s boys basketball team didn’t lose a game in its own gym all season, but the Chargers won’t have the advantage of a home crowd when they take on Wayne County in the MHSAA Class 5A quarterfinals. Nobody has that luxury at this point. The playoffs have shifted to Jackson, where Oxford (26-4) and Wayne County (11-12) will be the first teams to play at Jackson State University on Thursday at 9 a.m. Should the Chargers win, they will move to the Mississippi Coliseum to face either Ridgeland or West Harrison in next week’s semifinals. (March 4, 2015, Page 1B)

Jones, OHS overwhelm Clarksdale in playoff opener

Late in Oxford’s MHSAA Class 5A second-round playoff game Saturday night, Cortez Jones took an outlet pass from teammate Josh Gibbs on the wing in transition. He could’ve tried to beat the only defender in front of him to the rim, but Jones set himself behind the 3-point line and drained another shot instead. Oxford’s senior guard was in the zone. Jones scored from every spot on the floor and had a career night once he was done, finishing with a game-high 27 points and helping the Chargers advance to this week’s state quarterfinals with a 76-57 victory over Clarksdale in their final home game of the season. Oxford (26-4) will play Wayne County in the quarterfinals Thursday morning at 9 at Jackson State University. (March 1, 2015, Page 1B, 4B)

Chargers blow past Coldwater on Senior Night

Oxford High’s seniors played their final game in front of their home fans Thursday night. It played out like the rest of them did this season. The Chargers capped the regular season with a 74-53 victory over Coldwater on Senior Night at the Oxford High gym to continue their push toward the postseason. Next up for Oxford (23-4) is its Division 2-5A tournament opener against fourth-seeded West Point on Tuesday at West Point. (February 13, 2015, Page 6A, 7A)

Chargers take 2-5A title with win over New Hope

Oxford High’s boys basketball team was winning, but it wasn’t enough. Not if the Chargers wanted to call themselves division champs. (February 8, 2015, Page 4B)

Oxford moves to 11-0 with rout of ‘Dores

Once Oxford’s boys basketball team stopped thinking and started playing, there wasn’t much Lafayette could do to slow the Chargers down. Oxford turned an early seesaw affair into a rout by turning smothering defense into instant offense in an 80-42 victory over the rival Commodores at the Oxford High gym on Friday night that kept the Chargers unbeaten. Their 11-0 record matches the best start to a season in coach Drew Tyler’s 18-year tenure. Lafayette High’s girls team beat the Lady Chargers 50-47 (December 21, 2014, Page 1B, 2B)

Chargers school Hilltoppers 85-59

The day started with Shelby McEwen skying for a putback dunk. It ended with an easy victory for Oxford. In the first school day game in coach Drew Tyler’s 18-year tenure, the Chargers overwhelmed Houston with their athleticism and a bevy of outside shooting to cruise to an 85-59 victory Thursday afternoon at the Oxford High gym. (November 21, 2014, Page 7A)

Oxford starts season with win over Wildcats

Early foul trouble and a slow start had the Oxford High boys basketball team on the ropes against the Calhoun City Wildcats, but the Chargers were able to mount a comeback in the second half and come away with a 87-81 victory in their season opener inside the new OHS gym Tuesday night. (November 12, 2014, Page 1B)
