JUCO QB chooses Rebels over Kansas
Landing a seasoned junior college quarterback for the 2010 signing class was one of the many goals Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt wanted to achieve following the Rebels’ loss to Mississippi State last month. Thanks to a successful trip made by Iowa Western Community College’s Zack Stoudt over the weekend to Oxford, that goal got a lot closer to becoming a reality.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Stoudt chose the Rebels on Monday over serious interest from Kansas thanks in large part to his official visit to Ole Miss’ campus and the relationship he started to build with Nutt and quarterbacks coach Dave Rader. (December 14, 2010, Page 8)
OM’s Bolden sets career mark on rushing front
A season of frustration running the ball for the Ole Miss Rebels was eliminated in one night thanks to the sensational performance of junior Brandon Bolden on Saturday night in the team’s 55-38 win over Fresno State.
The Baton Rouge, La., native had a career night running the ball as he totaled 228 yards and two rushing scores on 19 carries. The performance was the focal point of a running attack that amassed a season-high 425 yards, while Bolden’s total ranked sixth best in school history. (September 27, 2010, Page 1B)
Late rally lifts JSU to upset of Rebels
The shock on Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt’s face following Saturday’s loss to Jacksonville State was as apparent as the 49-48 score posted on the Jumbotron at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium following the second overtime period.
The Rebels, a team that was riding a wave of positive emotion after Friday’s announcement that quarterback Jeremiah Masoli would be allowed to play this season, have suddenly gone from a team that some thought would win eight or nine games to one that some think may finish below .500.
Losses in the season opener always hurt, but a loss to a lower division team coached by Nutt’s former employer hurt even more, especially when the Rebels led 31-13 after the third quarter and had their chances to stop the Gamecocks in both the late stages of regulation and overtime. Clarity with OM QBs expected today
Today’s football practice at Ole Miss is expected to bring a bit more clarity to the battle to become the starting quarterback against Jacksonville State in the season opener next week.
Both Nathan Stanley and Jeremiah Masoli performed well in the final scrimmage of the preseason camp held last Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Stanley missed just one pass (10-for-11) during his time under center and out of the shotgun and also added a 25-yard touchdown run once the team started red zone work. (August 24, 2010, Page 6)
Rebels’ D takes a toll on quarterbacks
Ole Miss’ football practice on Tuesday was one dominated by the defense and the rain. Shortly after the punting and place-kicking work was completed, heavy rain and wind forced the action inside. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said the offense and defense ran 80 plays and did everything but tackle to the ground.
The Rebel defense, led by players such as defensive end Kentrell Lockett, forced several mistakes by quarterbacks Nathan Stanley, Jeremiah Masoli and Randall Mackey during the practice. (August 18, 2010, Page 8)
Mississippi players flocking to Rebels
It was a little over two years ago when Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt pledged to every Rebel fan that he and his staff would do everything they possibly could to sign more players from the state of Mississippi.
After inking just four high school players from the state in each of his first two classes, Nutt started to show that he and his staff were making traction in the state by signing seven players in the 2010 class. While back-to-back wins in the Cotton Bowl have made things even more attractive for recruits to want to attend Ole Miss, the relationships that Nutt, recruiting coordinator Chris Vaughn, running backs coach Derrick Nix and other coaches have built with players and coaches in the state has really started to pay dividends. Nutt, Kennedy, Jones headline Standard event
The Standard, a men’s conference geared toward making men more in touch with Jesus Christ, returns to Oxford and the Ole Miss community Friday and Saturday. The two-day conference, which features challenging talks and presentations from the likes of Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt and men’s basketball coach Andy Kennedy, will be held at C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum. Rader ready to scratch itch in Oxford
AROUND THE SQUARE — After a four-year hiatus from college football, Dave Rader was announced last week as Ole Miss’ next offensive coordinator. This past weekend he met with the media to discuss his decision to return to coaching rather than switch to politics.
