Mills’ field goal lifts Chargers to win
A 36-yard field goal from Cody Mills as time expired lifted the Oxford Chargers to a 9-6 win over Pontotoc in junior varsity action Tuesday night at Bobby Holcomb Field. In games that are designed to improve the skills of the players who will eventually be full-time members of the varsity, getting the opportunity to kick a game-winning field goal is an added bonus for all involved.
Mills, who had to stay focused after Pontotoc’s coach called a timeout just before he kicked, credited the snap and the hold for him having success. (September 7, 2011, Page 6)
Chargers top Tupelo in 9th grade football
Oxford opened its 2011 season on the road with an 8-6 win over Tupelo. In a game described as a defensive struggle by head coach Jason Russell, the ninth-grade Chargers were able to go ahead of the Golden Wave thanks to a deep pass play and score from George Edwards. Michael McGee added the 2-point conversion for the difference in the contest. K.T. McCollins was credited with adding great run support from his cornerback spot, D.K. Hutchins and Courtland Barnes also had big games on defense.
The team returns to action Monday at home against Lafayette. Action gets underway at 5:30 p.m. (August 24, 2011, Page 8)
