WATER VALLEY — Calhoun City held a 6-0 lead over Water Valley late in the first half. It looked like the Blue Devils were going to have their first scare of the young season. WATER VALLEY — The Blue Devils and head coach Brad Embry had two main objectives heading into Friday’s Region 2-3A opener against Mooreville: Get the win and stay healthy.

Water Valley offensive lineman Taylor Edwards didn’t expect to be playing at a Division I school when he first started playing football. Even though he has the size (6-foot-4, 280 pounds), strength and athletic ability college recruiters are looking for, Edwards didn’t think it was possible he would earn an athletic scholarship. His mindset changed this spring when Troy University offered him a scholarship. After visiting the Troy campus a couple of times and camping at some other schools such as Louisiana-Monroe, UAB and Memphis, Edwards decided Troy was the best fit for him in the future. SPRINGVILLE — Water Valley’s goal of winning the Division 3-3A championship outright and earning a bye to start the 3A playoffs was done in by miscues Thursday night. Six errors doomed the Lady Blue Devils in their 9-8 loss to South Pontotoc in the regular season finale. The Lady Cougars, who rallied to beat WVHS on Monday night in extra innings, scored six of their nine runs due to errors, including the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning. WATER VALLEY — Led by a balanced offensive attack, the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils had little trouble defeating the Byhalia Lady Indians on Thursday.
Water Valley remained unbeaten in District 2-3A play (3-0) by knocking off Byhalia 11-1 in five innings. The Lady Blue Devils left five runners in scoring position in the first three innings, so they could have ended the game even earlier, but coach Clint Faust seemed pleased with the overall production and the 13 hits his group collected. WATER VALLEY — Friday night was a satisfying night for the Water Valley football team on multiple levels.
Not only did the Blue Devils advance to the third round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs with a 23-14 victory at Bobby Clark Field, but they also exorcised some demons by eliminating the same Winona Tigers that ended their 2010 season. (November 14, 2011, Page 3B)
