Whitten whitewashes Lady Chargers

Friday night’s Crosstown Classic softball game with Oxford came down to the pitching of Lafayette’s Brooke Whitten. While the Lady Commodores got a couple of key insurance runs late in the 6-0 win, Whitten really didn’t need much help based on the effort she gave in the pitching circle. Vance provides leadership, numbers for WVHS

WATER VALLEY — The clicking sound in Haley Vance’s ankle was loud enough for her to hear it. Her final basketball game as a Water Valley Lady Blue Devil resulted in a sprained ankle and while that didn’t make an impact for the girls basketball team, a bum ankle wasn’t a good thing for the softball team and first-year coach Casey Clouse.

Fortunately for Vance and the rest of her teammates, she was able to recover from the sprained ankle in time, and once she got her timing back at the plate, she was able deliver a great performance in her final year wearing blue and white. (June 7, 2012, Page 1B)

Lady Chargers have new energy after wins

Oxford softball coach Lauren Hill allowed her Lady Chargers a chance to rest and refocus on the next phase of the MHSAA’s Class 5A playoffs Monday. If it was up to the Lady Chargers, they would have played their first game with McComb instead of waiting until Thursday.

There is a new level of enthusiasm at OHS in regards to softball thanks to a series sweep of Starkville over the weekend. The Lady Chargers earned a 6-5 win on the road last Friday before returning home to beat SHS 7-4.

Hill said the two wins really energized a group that is still learning how to compete at this new level. (April 24, 2012, Page 9)

Oxford shows youth on Senior Night

The Oxford Lady Chargers didn’t wrap up their home slate like they would have liked Monday, falling to Bruce 6-3 on Senior Night.
With the playoffs right around the corner, Oxford’s inability to consistently close out innings without allowing Bruce to score, coupled with the Lady Chargers’ errors in the field and on the base path, bothered head coach Lauren Hill. (April 17, 2012, Page 7)
