Burns reunites with Nutt, joins Ole Miss’ staff
Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt finished making moves on his staff for the 2011 season today with the hiring of Keith Burns as secondary coach. Burns, a 1982 graduate of Arkansas, comes to Ole Miss from Kansas State where he coached defensive backs under coach Bill Snyder. (more…) (January 21, 2011, Page 6A)
Ole Miss’ Vaughn will have to return to hunt mode down the stretch
Chris Vaughn, Ole Miss’ recruiting coordinator for football, said four months ago at Ole Miss’ Media Day that he prefers to be in hunt mode when it comes to landing a recruit rather than protecting the verbal commitments he and the rest of the staff have already secured.
At the time, the Rebels had 14 verbal commitments and were about to garner another five before the 2010 season even started.
Vaughn and the rest of the staff have continued to gain commitments since that point, including the signatures of four junior college players earlier this month, but Vaughn will have to fight hard to regain a couple of players from Florida, the state that Vaughn has done a great job of recruiting since he arrived in Oxford. Grimes ready to hit field
Tony Grimes has had a frustrating summer.
What was supposed to be a summer full of excitement and preparation for his first year in Oxford was instead spent wishing and waiting for the all the necessary paperwork to be approved for his admission into school.
That frustration turned into relief last week when the Hollywood Hills (Fla.) standout cornerback was approved by the NCAA as a full qualifier.
Grimes wasted no time getting to Oxford and was ready to start practicing once he got to campus. (August 27, 2010, Page 6A)

Mississippi players flocking to Rebels
It was a little over two years ago when Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt pledged to every Rebel fan that he and his staff would do everything they possibly could to sign more players from the state of Mississippi.
After inking just four high school players from the state in each of his first two classes, Nutt started to show that he and his staff were making traction in the state by signing seven players in the 2010 class. While back-to-back wins in the Cotton Bowl have made things even more attractive for recruits to want to attend Ole Miss, the relationships that Nutt, recruiting coordinator Chris Vaughn, running backs coach Derrick Nix and other coaches have built with players and coaches in the state has really started to pay dividends. Rebels continue to make impact with Fla. football players
Chris Vaughn’s importance to the Ole Miss football program and coach Houston Nutt was highlighted again over the weekend with three verbal commitments from the state of Florida for the 2011 signing class.
Vaughn, the Rebels’ recruiting coordinator and a native of Tallahassee, Fla., has been able to secure the commitments from a bevy of Florida standouts since he arrived from Arkansas in Nov. 2007. Many of those players are defensive backs, the position Vaughn coaches alongside Kim Dameron, and that trend continued Sunday with two commitments from defensive backs.
Ole Miss’ verbal commitment list increased to seven on Sunday when Gerrod Holliman, Andrew Johnson and Serderius Bryant all picked the Rebels. Holliman and Johnson are teammates at Miami’s Southridge High School, while Bryant attends Sanford’s Seminole High. (more…) (July 6, 2010, Page 6A)
Parent of the year: Oxford
Marquette Vaughn took the top honor as the Oxford School District Parent of the Year. Vaughn moved to Oxford in 2008 with her family after her husband took a job as an assistant football coach for the Ole Miss Rebels football team. She now serves as a temp at Bramlett Elementary but is best known as Clifford the Dog. (April 27, 2010, Page 1-2)
Education briefs
- Lafayette High School student Ann-Marie Herod has been accepted into the Mississippi School for the Arts in theatre.
- Bramlett Elementary School’s First Grade teachers celebrated first grade students Accelerated Reading quiz challenge requiring their teachers to dance the Macarena, The Chicken Dance and a few others.
- Students showed exemplary behavior and citizenship for the month of March at Oxford Elementary. Students were awarded certificates, ribbons, and a special treat at lunch.
- Students are on the Headmaster’s List and Honor Roll for Oxford University School.
- “The Charger” newspaper has received a Silver Crown award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association based at Columbia University in New York City.
