Chris Ellis

Could Preston Overbey see time at catcher?

Ole Miss sophomore Preston Overbey made his career debut at catcher on Tuesday, catching right-handed freshman Chris Ellis in a perfect ninth.

Due to the injury to sophomore Will Allen, and Taylor Hightower no longer being a member of the team, the Rebels only have freshman Austin Knight and junior college transfer Kody Sepulveda as catchers on the roster.

Overbey has been working in practice at catcher because of the dwindling numbers behind the plate, so Bianco opted to give the corner infielder some game action against UT-Martin. (March 7, 2012, Page 7)

New approach has Mathis walking more

Leading up to the season a lot was made of Tanner Mathis’ expanded frame and how trading in his slap-like swing for a more emphatic one might lead to more extra base hits. (more…) (February 27, 2012, Page 1B)

Eight Rebels debut in win over ASU

Arkansas State may have scored first, but No. 20 Ole Miss scored eight times after that to knock off the visiting Red Wolves 8-1 in their home opener. The lopsided victory allowed for eight players to make their Ole Miss debuts at Oxford-University Stadium. (February 22, 2012, Page 6)

Pitching roles up for grabs out of bullpen

Ole Miss’ weekend rotation and closer spot heading into the season are set.
The role of nearly every other pitcher on the staff, however, is far from it.
Starting at the back end of the bullpen, Ole Miss will look to junior right-hander Brett Huber to reclaim his freshman form as the team’s closer. (February 8, 2012, Page 6)

Underclassmen showing they belong

The veterans may be the guys Ole Miss looks to for leadership and stability when the season starts, but it was the youngsters that stole the show during Thursday’s intrasquad at Oxford-University Stadium.

Young hurlers Chris Ellis, Scott Weathersby, Sam Smith, Will Jamison, Chase Reeves and Bobby Wahl combined to allow two runs through seven innings of work. (February 3, 2012, Page 6A)

Rebs anxious to get practice underway

Mike Bianco has a number of reasons to be anxious for the official start of fall ball this weekend.

The fall ball season offers the Ole Miss head baseball coach the opportunity to begin molding the team without the pressure of facing opponents.

In addition to getting a fresh start after a disappointing season in the spring, the Rebels welcome a plethora of new players — nine of which were drafted but opted to come to Oxford — into the fold. (September 16, 2011, Page 6A)

Ole Miss freshmen adapting to college life

Six key pieces of the future of Ole Miss’ baseball program didn’t just stroll into the athletics department on Thursday like typical freshmen.

Instead, pitchers Hawtin Buchanan, Josh Laxer and Chris Ellis, catcher/first baseman Sikes Orvis, outfielder Auston Bousfield and outfielder/left-handed pitcher Chase Reeves entered the meeting room sounding more like old men, discussing how sore they were from the advanced workout regiment they’d been put through during summer school, nodding in agreement to one another’s assessments.

It’s all part of the process of becoming a Division 1 athlete, and all six have accepted that. (August 1, 2011, Page 8A)
