Cay Papagolos

Area coaches ready for softball season

There is a lot of reason to be excited about the upcoming high school softball season if you’re one of the three area coaches from Lafayette, Oxford and Water Valley.

The Lady Commodores, led by Cay Papagolos, return a bevy of talented players from a team that advanced to the Class 4A playoffs last season. In Oxford coach Lauren Hill’s case, a new field and several newcomers have given her program a brand new start at turning things around, while in Kendra Bensch’s case, Water Valley has the best player in the area in Ashley Phillips as well as a talented nucleus that includes four seniors and three juniors overall. The 2011 season begins this weekend for the three teams, with Oxford hosting the second annual Charger Classic at its new softball field on campus and at FNC Park. (February 25, 2011, Page 7A)

Robison’s return to LHS makes impact on team

The final chapter in Stormy Robison’s prep softball career has turned out to be another stepping stone for the ever improving Lafayette Lady Commodore softball program.

After spending two seasons at South Panola, Robison returned to LHS this past season to finish out her stellar career at the place she has always felt very comfortable at.

While Robison wasn’t ultimately able to push LHS to even greater heights in the Class 4A playoffs, her leadership qualities and strong work ethic definitely made an impression on a young LHS team that is expected to be strong over the next few years.

Robison said she really enjoyed her time with her teammates this year and added that she never felt any pressure from them to help them win a state title like she helped the Lady Tigers do in 2008. (June 24, 2010, Page 1B)

Decision time coming for White

AROUND THE SQUARE AND BEYOND — To stay or not to stay. That’s the big question that has been on the mind of Ole Miss men’s basketball guard Terrico White since he placed his name into the NBA draft a little less than a month ago.

White has been gathering input on whether he’s good enough to be picked in the first round of the upcoming draft since early April and with his school commitments now out of the way, White has been working hard trying to impress NBA brass during individual workouts. (May 5, 2010, Page 9)

Great effort not enough to lift Lady ‘Dores to win

A gritty effort ultimately wasn’t enough to lift the Lafayette Lady Commodores past Kosciusko in a must-win playoff game Monday evening.

LHS was eliminated from the MHSAA’s Class 4A playoffs by the Lady Whippets 4-3 in eight innings despite leaving every ounce of energy on the field. (May 4, 2010, Page 8)

LHS, Kosciusko to resume softball series tonight

Driving in more base runners in scoring position will be the main objective of the Lafayette Lady Commodores today when their best-of-three Class 4A playoff series with Kosciusko resumes.

LHS lost 3-1 to the Lady Whippets on Friday at LHS before heavy rains prevented the decisive doubleheader on Saturday to be played. In the loss on Friday, the Lady Commodores stranded nine base runners overall, with eight in scoring position, a stat coach Cay Papagolos said had to improve. (May 3, 2010, Page 3B)

Lafayette scores runs by the bunches in win over BHS

A steady supply of runs early and often led to the Lafayette softball team’s lopsided 13-1 victory over Byhalia at home on Thursday. (April 23, 2010, Page 6A)

Lady Jags pile on runs in win over Lafayette

Not a lot went right for the Lafayette Lady Commodores softball team on the scoreboard Thursday against DeSoto Central.

In the 15-4 loss, the Lady Commodores were unable to keep the Lady Jaguars off the basepaths and in turn were also unable to get a consistent supply of hits, resulting in the lopsided loss.

According to Lafayette coach Cay Papagolos, the game was more about pushing her team in the non-district showdown than it was anything else.

Papagolos said she scheduled the game against DeSoto Central in an effort to challenge her team and get the most out of her players. (April 16, 2010, Page 8a)

Kesler leads LHS to win over Lady Devils

A disappointing one-run loss to Lewisburg on Friday night was quickly washed away by the Lafayette Lady Commodores in their 13-0 win over Water Valley Saturday afternoon.

LHS lost 10-9 to Lewisburg after leading 9-1 going into the fifth inning, a result that was not even a factor for the Lady Commodores less than 24 hours later. (April 12, 2010, Page 2B)
