Rebel ‘D’ shows up again in drills

For the second straight practice, the Ole Miss defense got the better of the offense in work designed to improve both units under pressure.

Following Ole Miss’ first practice in shoulder pads, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said he was impressed with how his linemen pushed up the field, especially on the ends where four players were credited with getting good pressure on quarterbacks Barry Brunetti, Randall Mackey and Zack Stoudt. (August 9, 2011, Page 6)

Rebel seniors reflect on good memories

Saturday evening’s game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the annual “Egg Bowl” will be the final home contest for 18 Ole Miss seniors. The class, which includes safeties Johnny Brown and Fon Ingram, linebacker Jonathan Cornell, and Oxford native Zach Brent, helped changed the fortune of the program over the past few seasons with back-to-back trips to the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.

Two of the seniors who will honored before Saturday’s game, defensive tackle Jerrell Powe and defensive end Kentrell Lockett, could return next year, but for the majority of the class, the matchup with the Bulldogs will be the final time the group gets to put on the red and blue together. (November 25, 2010, Page 9A)

Lockett lost for season

After injuring himself during the first quarter of Ole Miss’ 55-38 victory over Fresno State on Saturday, senior defensive end Kentrell Lockett is done for the year.

During the Bulldogs’ second possession of the game, Lockett jumped in an attempt to block a screen pass and landed awkwardly. He remained on the turf until trainers helped him limp off the field.

During his postgame press conference, head coach Houston Nutt confirmed that Lockett will likely miss the season with an apparent ACL injury. (September 27, 2010, Page 1B)

Nutt pleased with first practice of week

Ole Miss’ first full practice following its win over Tulane seemed to please coach Houston Nutt, who has been touting the importance of correcting mistakes under positive conditions since Saturday night. (September 15, 2010, Page 8)

Rebs still looking to put four quarters together

An inability to make plays on offense or defense in the third quarter reared its ugly head again for the Ole Miss Rebels Saturday night against Tulane. While the miscues didn’t end up leading to a second-straight come-from-behind win for the opponent, the Rebels were visibly stagnant on offense and unable to slow down the Green Wave on defense coming out of halftime.

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said he wasn’t as worried about the third quarter lull because the Rebels held on to win this week, but it’s obvious more has to be done to prevent a slow start in the second half with Vanderbilt on the horizon. (September 13, 2010, Page 2B)

Sanders makes first appearance at practice

With the season opener against Jacksonville State a little less than a month away, the Ole Miss football team has wasted no time hitting the practice field and slowly but surely the Rebels are getting their newcomers onto the field. The latest addition was freshman receiver Vincent Sanders.

Long summer comes to an end for Rebels

A long spring and summer for fans waiting on Ole Miss football to start finally came to an end Sunday. A healthy crowd of onlookers got their first taste of what the 2010 Rebels will look like on the field with the first practice of the preseason.

Hot temperatures weren’t enough to persuade fans from not getting a glimpse of new transfer quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and some of the other players who hope to lead the Rebels back to a major bowl.
