Led by 27 points from Ashley Phillips and 18 from C.C. Phillips, the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils were able to earn their first win of the season Tuesday in the Charleston Round Robin Tournament. WVHS defeated Charleston 59-54, while the Blue Devils lost 52-50. Water Valley’s girls led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, 27-26 at the half and 45-38 at the end of the third. The Water Valley Lady Blue Devils basketball team is hoping to take the program to another level heading into their second year under coach Jason Purdy.
It’s because of what Purdy has seen during preseason practices that he believes the Lady Blue Devils can take a step in the right direction to improve upon last season, which ended with a first-round loss in the playoffs. (November 3, 2010, Page 6)
There was a game early on in the season where the light turned on for Lafayette’s Shaquilla Isom and things got a whole lot easier on the court. It’s not that Isom hadn’t shown flashes of her all-around ability as a sophomore, but there was a marked difference in the way she handled herself on the court compared to any point during the 2008-09 campaign. Two players each from the Water Valley girls and boys basketball teams were named recently to the All-Region 2-3A team.
Earning a spot on the girls team were C.C. Phillips and Ashley Phillips, while Tavi Toles and Matt Dalton both represent the boys team.
Jamelia Hoskins of Aberdeen was named the girls Player of the Year, while Anthony McDonald of Aberdeen won the boys top award. Latorrence Bivens of Aberdeen was named Girls Coach of the Year, while the Boys Coach of the year was Roy Hazzle of Aberdeen. (March 15, 2010)
WATER VALLEY GIRLS HOOPS — Three days after earning a character-building win over South Pontotoc, the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils were unable to recapture that spark in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs, falling to M.S.-Palmer 65-55.
