WATER VALLEY — The Blue Devils and head coach Brad Embry had two main objectives heading into Friday’s Region 2-3A opener against Mooreville: Get the win and stay healthy.
The Blue Devils (5-1 overall) excelled in all facets of the game, accumulating 449 total yards of offense, while limiting the Jaguars (2-4) to just 172 total yards. (September 24, 2012, Page 5B)
Water Valley offensive lineman Taylor Edwards didn’t expect to be playing at a Division I school when he first started playing football. Even though he has the size (6-foot-4, 280 pounds), strength and athletic ability college recruiters are looking for, Edwards didn’t think it was possible he would earn an athletic scholarship. His mindset changed this spring when Troy University offered him a scholarship. After visiting the Troy campus a couple of times and camping at some other schools such as Louisiana-Monroe, UAB and Memphis, Edwards decided Troy was the best fit for him in the future. Dominant is what the Oxford Lady Chargers were Saturday in the Region 1-5A meet held at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field. Oxford finished first in the meet with 212 points, almost 100 more than second-place finisher Center Hill (117). The Lady Chargers also finished with seven first-place finishes and a bevy of seconds to earn the title. First-place finishes garner 10 points, while second-place finishes garner eight.
