Hopeful signs seen on path to better race relations

Events around the community – this summer’s dialogue and action between First and Second Baptist churches about past wrongs, last weekend’s dedication of the Burns-Belfry Museum & Multicultural Center and this weekend’s open house at the former black, one-room Newell School – are all signs of progress in race relations. Chad Harris releases new EP; set for OLHS fundraiser Friday, April 6 

OXFORD TOWN – While the EP won’t officially be released until May, Oxford will get the first chance to enjoy native son Chad Harris’ new album “Burning Daylight” on Friday, April 6, at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center. The CD release party is planned as a fundraiser for OLHS. Turn to Page 12 in Oxford Town No. 973  for details about Harris, his new EP and the upcoming party. (April 5, 2012, Page 12)

Alejandro’s Back!

OXFORD TOWN – Alejandro Escovedo returns to Oxford next Tuesday (Sept. 14)  for  a Larry Brown tribute set and discussion at Off Square Books at 5 p.m. followed by a full concert at Proud Larry’s later that night. Oxford EAGLE News Editor Jonathan Scott talked to Escovedo about the shows, his new album titled “Street Songs of Love” and Oxford, one of his favorite cities in which to visit and perform. “Street Songs of Love” features “high powered vocal support” from legends such as Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople and Bruce Springsteen. Parrish’s celebrates anniversary; we get the gifts

OXFORD TOWN — J-Roddy Walston & The Business are set to help Parrish Baker celebrate the first anniversary of his bar, Parrish’s, at its new location just off the Square in Oxford. Compared to the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Bruce Springsteen and Grand Funk; J-Roddy and band will rock the rafters at Parrish’s on Monday, March 15.

Bryant’s ‘Galilee’ ‘haunts’

OXFORD TOWN – Andrew Bryant is set for a show at Two Sick tonight (Thursday, March 11) when he’ll share a triple-bill night of rock with Gunslingers and Cory Taylor Cox & The Time Machine. Bryant, who is currently touring in support of his album “Galilee,” has been appearing at events and venues around Oxford lately and shows no signs of slowing in the near future. Bryant and “Galilee” are being compared to legends such as Springsteen and Neil Young and their work. (March 11, 2010, Page 7)
