Lafayette splits with District 2-4A foe
A three-day break due to last week’s heavy snowstorm ended up being a huge help to the Lafayette Lady Commodores on Friday night against Senatobia. LHS broke a two-game losing streak in District 2-4A play by downing the Lady Warriors 71-38 in the LHS gym. The win improved the Lady Commodores to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the district.
Lafayette’s boys weren’t as fortunate as the girls, losting to Senatobia 49-40 in the nightcap. (January 17, 2011, Page 8)
Lafayette splits district games with Lewisburg
There were more signs the Lafayette Commodores were starting to come together as a boys basketball team Friday night in a matchup with Lewisburg in the LHS gym. The Commodores may have lost 48-43 to the visiting Patriots, but instead of falling behind early and eventually losing by double digits, the Commodores showed some grit by rallying from an eight-point deficit in the in the third quarter to pull into the lead late in the fourth quarter. Lady ‘Dores down Tupelo; LHS boys fall
Lafayette’s girls and boys basketball teams culminated the first full week of the season with the annual Coach “C” Classic Saturday night in the LHS gym.
The Lady Commodores remained perfect with a 59-28 win over Tupelo, while the Commodores fell 65-40 to the Golden Wave in the final game of the one-day tournament.
For LHS girls coach Amy Sutton and boys coach Eric Robertson, the tournament, and three games this past week, served as a good measuring stick of where both of their teams are heading into district play this week. (December 13, 2010, Page 2B)

Defense, Liggins pace ‘Dores in shutout
Another dominant performance that showed the experience of the No. 1 Lafayette Commodores as much as it did their overall athletic ability was the backdrop of Friday’s 35-0 win over New Albany in the Class 4A playoffs.
LHS (14-0 overall) advanced to its second straight North Half title game by dismantling a Bulldog team that had won its first 13 games of the season. The Commodores, who will now play Noxubee County for the right to advance to Jackson for the MHSAA state championship, caused four turnovers in the win and used the mistakes to score three touchdowns on short fields. Versatile Conard developing as WVHS leader
Chris Conard has all the attributes of a star football player. He easily passes the eye test and looks good on paper. He has the skill set that not only makes him stand out, but has allowed the current junior to play on Water Valley’s varsity squad since he was in eighth grade.
Last Friday, Conard had a career-game in Water Valley’s 20-10 win in the season finale at Mooreville, grabbing three interceptions while also making nine tackles and breaking up five passes.
It’s because of that stellar performance that Conard was named the EAGLE’s Final Player of the Week for the 2010 season. (November 2, 2010, Page 9)
Mack paces ‘Dores in win over Pats
Thursday may have been Senior Night, but it was sophomore Brandon Mack that stole the show for the Lafayette Commodores.
Starting in place of junior quarterback Jeremy Liggins, who was dressed but held out of the game to rest a sore right ankle, Mack did a little bit of everything to lead the Commodores to a 37-7 victory over the Lewisburg Patriots at William L. Buford Stadium.
Against the Patriots, Mack completed 2 of 6 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 64 yards and two scores, and also intercepted a pass from Lewisburg quarterback Colby Sappington inside Lafayette’s 10-yard line. (October 29, 2010, Page 6A)
