Oxford D pummels LHS in Crosstown Classic

Six years of frustration over losing to Lafayette was erased in one night for the Oxford Chargers thanks to an inspired and near flawless defensive performance. The Chargers defeated the fifth-ranked Commodores 19-0 in front of a jubilant home crowd at Bobby Holcomb Field and regional television audience watching live on Fox Sports South on Thursday night by pounding the Commodores into submission at the point of attack. Hill: LHS has plenty of speed yet again

There may be different names running the Lafayette High offense this season but Oxford coach Johnny Hill said quarterback Brandon Mack and running back D.K. Buford have more than enough speed and talent to make all the plays to beat his Chargers if OHS don’t play well.

Oxford hosts No. 6 ranked Lafayette in the annual Crosstown Classic contest Thursday night at 7. In a game that is being sponsored by C Spire Wireless and highlighted on Fox Sports South, Hill is hoping that the only fireworks that go off are before the game and turned in by his team rather than by the speed of Buford and Mack. (August 29, 2012, Page 6)

LHS starts Robertson Era off right

Leave it to the Lafayette Commodores to win a dramatic defensive struggle in Eric Robertson’s head coaching debut. It was the 33rd straight win for LHS and the first for Robertson, who served the team the previous seven seasons as defensive coordinator. (more…) (August 20, 2012, Page 1B)

LHS offense, defense produces big plays

SOUTHAVEN — Lafayette’s dress rehearsals before the season opener Friday at home against Tupelo produced mostly positive results. Buford. (more…) (August 13, 2012, Page 7)

Commodores looking to build in jamboree

An opportunity to build on the first two weeks of camp against two different sets of players is what the Lafayette Commodores have to look forward to in Friday’s jamboree at Southaven.

Lafayette’s varsity will play the Southaven Chargers in one 20-minute quarter and then finish the evening with a quarter against Lake Cormorant. In between the varsity action, Lafayette’s junior varsity will take on Southaven.

Friday will be the second scrimmage for the Commodores, who held a dress rehearsal of sorts this past Saturday. (August 9, 2012, Page 4B)

Lafayette’s Buford turns heads at combine

Signing fast players has been the main objective of coaches in the Southeastern Conference for years.
Athletes that can change the momentum of a contest in the blink of an eye are highly coveted every signing class and it’s very unlikely that will ever change. (more…) (June 1, 2012, Page 7A)
