Davis looking for big gains from OM backs

In Ole Miss’ offense under Houston Nutt, running backs have to learn to share.

All-Americans Darren McFadden and Felix Jones had to do it at Arkansas and now Enrique Davis, a former prep star, is learning how to do it.

While Davis was a standout in high school and at prep school, he admitted on Monday that he wasn’t surprised when he got to Ole Miss and found out that he would be one of several running backs to get carries.

The committee approach is something Davis said he has come to appreciate and understand. (September 17, 2010, Page 6A)

Masoli leads Ole Miss past Green Wave

Ole Miss’ most important offseason acquisition single-handily led the Rebels to their first win of the 2010 season Saturday night at the Louisiana Superdome.

Senior quarterback Jeremiah Masoli continued to thrill the Ole Miss faithful by pacing the Rebels in their 27-13 win over Tulane with 281 yards and a touchdown passing while adding another 27 yards and a score on the ground. In a game where the Rebels (1-1 overall) failed to gain a single yard in the third quarter, it was Masoli’s early success and one long completion to Markeith Summers in the fourth quarter that made the biggest differences in the victory for a team that was bound and determined to put the disappointing overtime loss to Jacksonville State last week firmly behind them. (September 13, 2010, Page 1B)

Rebels needed to achieve…

Ole Miss came into Saturday night’s game with Tulane at the Louisiana Superdome needing a win in a major way.

This past week was a tough one on campus for the Rebels after suffering an embarrassing double-overtime loss to Jacksonville State and the talk from the players was to make up for that with a one-sided win. (more…) (September 13, 2010, Page 1B)

Rebs still looking to put four quarters together

An inability to make plays on offense or defense in the third quarter reared its ugly head again for the Ole Miss Rebels Saturday night against Tulane. While the miscues didn’t end up leading to a second-straight come-from-behind win for the opponent, the Rebels were visibly stagnant on offense and unable to slow down the Green Wave on defense coming out of halftime.

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said he wasn’t as worried about the third quarter lull because the Rebels held on to win this week, but it’s obvious more has to be done to prevent a slow start in the second half with Vanderbilt on the horizon. (September 13, 2010, Page 2B)

Late rally lifts JSU to upset of Rebels

The shock on Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt’s face following Saturday’s loss to Jacksonville State was as apparent as the 49-48 score posted on the Jumbotron at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium following the second overtime period.

The Rebels, a team that was riding a wave of positive emotion after Friday’s announcement that quarterback Jeremiah Masoli would be allowed to play this season, have suddenly gone from a team that some thought would win eight or nine games to one that some think may finish below .500.

Losses in the season opener always hurt, but a loss to a lower division team coached by Nutt’s former employer hurt even more, especially when the Rebels led 31-13 after the third quarter and had their chances to stop the Gamecocks in both the late stages of regulation and overtime. (September 6, 2010, Page 1B)

GAME BLOG: Jacksonville State

Masoli hopes to put past behind him

By now you’ve heard the story of Jeremiah Masoli and why he’s in Oxford wearing red and blue instead of Oregon’s green and yellow.

What could have been a Heisman Trophy campaign and quest for a national title has now turned into a search for redemption after being dismissed from Oregon and landing at Ole Miss.

During Monday’s Ole Miss Media Day, Masoli never shied away from questions regarding where he’d been and what he may — or may not — have actually done. (August 11, 2010, Page 8)

Bolden focused on controlling weight

How much of a difference can five pounds make? A world of difference according to Ole Miss rising junior Brandon Bolden.

On Tuesday, the Rebels’ running back said he weighed in at a svelte 213 pounds, and as long as he stays under 217 pounds, he’s happy. (June 23, 2010, Page 2B)

Another successful Grove Bowl

THE GODFREY SHOW – Late in the third quarter of Saturday’s Grove Bowl the realization hit that spring football in the South must be similar to the crackling atmosphere of a ACC tilt between Maryland and NC State in late October: About 25,000 disinterested fans and families lounging in a cavernous, fairly empty football stadium under blue skies and no humidity. See what Oxford Town’s sports columnist Steven Godfrey has to say about the Rebels as they wrap up their spring training. (April 22, 2010, Page 12)
