Chargers open 5A playoffs with familiar opponent

Oxford’s return to the playoffs will be against a familiar foe in Hernando. The best-of-three series begins Friday evening at 6. Abundance of errors dooms Chargers

Committing five errors in a single game is going to make for a long evening for any team.

Oxford shows maturity in win over NHS

Chris Baughman may be in his first season as Oxford High’s head baseball coach, but he seems to have already mastered the delivery of the between-inning speech.

Baughman’s discussion with his players after the visiting New Hope Trojans scored four runs off OHS starter James Lear in the top of the first inning on Friday was brief and to the point. Chargers fall to Olive Branch

Despite a seven-run fourth inning, the Oxford High baseball team was unable to overcome a fast start by Olive Branch in a 15-10 loss Tuesday night. The Chargers (1-2) got to within a run of the Conquistadors at 3-2 in the top of the third, but they fell behind by 10 runs after Olive Branch scored nine in the bottom half of the frame. Lafayette’s D. Dennis runs away with top honor

Oxford’s Billups wins top award in 5A

Oxford’s success on the football field this season was translated on the Mississippi Association of Coaches Class 5A All-State team that was recently released.

Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups was named Player of the Year after throwing for 2,915 yards and 33 touchdowns for the 9-4 Chargers. Billups ranked second in the entire state in both passing yards and touchdowns thrown.

Joining Billups on the first team offense for the MAC team were senior wide receiver DeShaun McNeal and senior tight end Larry Pettis. Senior offensive lineman Terry Johnson was also named to the second team on offense. Johnson will be playing in Saturday’s Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Classic in Mobile, Ala. (December 10, 2010, Page 6A)

Norris leads Chargers’ offensive line

Avery Norris may be the nicest guy in the world walking the halls of Oxford High during the week, but when the lights turn on Friday nights, he becomes a different person altogether.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound senior is the Chargers’ center, the leader of the offensive line, an additional coach on the field each game and the designated fireplug, or enforcer if you will, of the team. His role as the guy that will lay his body on the line is as important as his ability to snap the ball to quarterback Guy Cameron Billups each play. In short, without Norris, the Chargers’ offense can not function like it’s supposed. (August 20, 2010, Page 6A)

Chargers hungry to improve in ’10

Oxford’s first opportunity to improve on last year’s third-place finish in Region 1-5A and move past the first round of the 5A playoffs came Monday with the first official practice of the preseason.

West Point plays near flawless game in victory over Chargers

West Point’s most complete game of the season came at one of the most inopportune times for the Oxford Chargers Friday night at Edwin Moak Field.

The Green Wave defeated the Chargers 8-4 for their first win in six Division 2-5A games by playing extremely clean baseball on defense and getting timely hits against OHS starter Shae Mnichowski and reliever Cameron Rose. (April 12, 2010, Page 2B)

West Point upsets Chargers

SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — A four-run seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie and ultimately propelled the West Point Green Wave to an 8-4 win over the Oxford Chargers Friday night at Edwin Moak Field.
