Diamond Rebs have plenty of options as preseason begins

The Ole Miss baseball team officially opened its preseason last Friday with a plethora of possibilities surrounding the team, both in the form of headlines and lineups.

Team Snyder slugs way to Game 1 win

The Chicago Cubs have been making headlines recently for their hiring of former Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein, the architect of Boston’s two World Series championship teams.

What went largely unnoticed amongst national headlines was the job Ole Miss senior first baseman Matt Snyder did assembling the Red team’s roster for the annual best-of-three Pizza Bowl series that began on Wednesday.

After skillfully piecing together his team through Monday’s draft, the Red squad rolled past the Blue 10-4 on Wednesday at Oxford-University Stadium. (October 27, 2011, Page 7)

OF Bousfield making early impression on Rebels

Ole Miss’ regular-season opener at Texas Christian University isn’t until Feb. 17, but there’s no better time than the present to begin playing for starting jobs.

Entering the fall ball season, Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco said the outfield could see a lot of change with Tanner Mathis as the lone returning starter.

Auston Bousfield has taken note of the turnover and wasted no time making a good first impression on the Ole Miss coaching staff. (more…) (September 19, 2011, Page 3B)

Rebs anxious to get practice underway

Mike Bianco has a number of reasons to be anxious for the official start of fall ball this weekend.

The fall ball season offers the Ole Miss head baseball coach the opportunity to begin molding the team without the pressure of facing opponents.

In addition to getting a fresh start after a disappointing season in the spring, the Rebels welcome a plethora of new players — nine of which were drafted but opted to come to Oxford — into the fold. (September 16, 2011, Page 6A)

Ole Miss freshmen adapting to college life

Six key pieces of the future of Ole Miss’ baseball program didn’t just stroll into the athletics department on Thursday like typical freshmen.

Instead, pitchers Hawtin Buchanan, Josh Laxer and Chris Ellis, catcher/first baseman Sikes Orvis, outfielder Auston Bousfield and outfielder/left-handed pitcher Chase Reeves entered the meeting room sounding more like old men, discussing how sore they were from the advanced workout regiment they’d been put through during summer school, nodding in agreement to one another’s assessments.

It’s all part of the process of becoming a Division 1 athlete, and all six have accepted that. (August 1, 2011, Page 8A)
