LMS falls to Batesville in football

Lafayette’s seventh- and eighth-grade football teams were unable to come away with wins against Batesville on Thursday at William L. Buford Stadium.

The seventh-grade lost 22-20, while the eighth graders lost 28-6 in the nightcap. In the seventh-grade game, Atarius Owens led Lafayette (1-3 overall) with three touchdowns in the contest. Lafayette Middle School earns sweep

The Lafayette Middle School football teams earned a sweep of Grenada on the road Tuesday night. The seventh-grade Commodores defeated the Chargers 24-6 in the first game of the doubleheader, while the eighth graders remained undefeated on the year with a 14-6 win. In the seventh-grade contest, Atarius Owens scored on runs that covered 58 and 35 yards. His first run came in the first quarter, while his last TD came with 6:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. Oxford, Lafayette both win in middle school clash

The crosstown rivalry between those in the Lafayette and Oxford School Districts knows no bounds and does not discriminate by age group.

Tuesday’s action on the gridiron proved that when the Oxford seventh graders claimed a 20-8 victory, while the Lafayette eighth-grade squad was able to hold on for a big 20-16 win. (August 31, 2011, Page 6A)

Lafayette splits doubleheader with Senatobia

The Lafayette Middle School football teams opened the season on the road against Senatobia. The seventh-grade Commodores fell 14-0, while the eighth-grade team won 6-0. Senatobia scored its first touchdown in the seventh-grade game on a 48-yard pass play in the third quarter, while the Warriors second score came on a run with 40 seconds left in the contest. Lafayette coach Glenn Williams credited the play of Atarius Owens, who had an interception returned for a touchdown called back because of a penalty. Quarterback Tyler Williams also played well. Zeke Liggins led the Commodores to the win in the nightcap as he scored the game’s lone TD on a 3-yard run with 23 seconds left in the second quarter. (more…) (August 24, 2011, Page 8)
