Lafayette’s eighth-grade football team took a huge step to securing the Tri-Lakes Conference title Tuesday by posting a 30-14 win over Batesville at William L. Buford Stadium. The victory improved the Commodores to 5-2 overall and an even more important 3-0 in the conference with one game left to play against Grenada. The Commodores were never threatened by the Tigers in the game as Atarius Owens got them on the scoreboard first with a 16-yard run at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter. The Lafayette Middle School football program had a successful evening Tuesday, sweeping the visiting Senatobia Warriors. The Lafayette Middle School football teams split a pair of games with South Panola in Batesville on Tuesday night. The seventh-grade Tigers beat Lafayette 16-0, while the older Commodores won 18-12 thanks to a great individual night from Atarius Owens, who scored all three touchdowns in the victory. Owens’ last touchdown covered 31 yards and it came with just seven seconds left in the game and the scored tied 12-12. South Panola had scored its last touchdown with just two minutes left in the fourth quarter. The seventh-grade lost 22-20, while the eighth graders lost 28-6 in the nightcap. In the seventh-grade game, Atarius Owens led Lafayette (1-3 overall) with three touchdowns in the contest. The Lafayette Middle School football teams earned a sweep of Grenada on the road Tuesday night. The seventh-grade Commodores defeated the Chargers 24-6 in the first game of the doubleheader, while the eighth graders remained undefeated on the year with a 14-6 win. In the seventh-grade contest, Atarius Owens scored on runs that covered 58 and 35 yards. His first run came in the first quarter, while his last TD came with 6:08 remaining in the fourth quarter.
