Anthony Hart

Lafayette to face skillful Warriors

A week after securing the No. 1 seed in Region 2-4A, the Lafayette Commodores must buckle up and face another challenging regional foe in Senatobia on Friday.

Lafayette coach Anthony Hart said he has a lot of respect for the Warriors, who are coming off of a 34-28 loss at North Pontotoc. (October 20, 2011, Page 6)

Dennis does it again for ‘Dores

Jeremy Liggins’ uniform has perhaps never been as clean following a game as it was after Lafayette’s game on Friday night at William L. Buford Stadium.

Thanks in large part to fellow senior Demarkous Dennis, the No. 1 Commodores didn’t need to rely on their four-star quarterback to beat the visiting New Albany Bulldogs 50-13 and take over sole possession of first place in Region 2-4A. (more…) (October 17, 2011, Page 4B)

LHS pens up New Albany Bulldogs

BLOG: The Lafayette Commodores won in typical fashion tonight, rolling past Region 2-4A foe New Albany 50-13 at William L. Buford Stadium.

The star of the game was — stop me if you have heard this before — Lafayette running back Demarkous Dennis. (more…) (October 14, 2011)

Area teams back home for region matchups

Tonight will be a busy evening for the area’s prep football teams.

While Lafayette will be hosting the New Albany Bulldogs in a battle for first place in Region 2-4A, the Water Valley Blue Devils will be hosting an athletic Nettleton Tigers team and the Oxford Chargers will be hosting a throwback Hernando Tigers squad for Homecoming.

All games are set to kickoff at 7. Lafayette’s game will be broadcast on 93.7 FM, Water Valley’s on 105.5 FM and Oxford’s on 95.5 FM as well as 102.1 FM. (October 14, 2011, Page 6A)

Tyson is a playmaker for ‘Dores

Big plays are a routine thing for Lafayette senior defensive end Keeyon Tyson each Friday night. For a player who doesn’t look like he would be able to maul opposing offensive linemen prior to the game, Tyson is one of the most productive members of a stellar first-team defense that hasn’t yielded but a handful of touchdowns to teams this season.

The key to Tyson’s success, according to his head coach, Anthony Hart, and his position coach, Ty Taylor, is his work ethic and his motor that never seems to stop running. (October 13, 2011, Page 6)

First place will be on the line Friday night at LHS

First place in Region 2-4A will be on the line when the No. 1 Lafayette Commodores host New Albany Friday night at William L. Buford Stadium.

As impressive as the Commodores (8-0 overall, 2-0 in Region 2-4A) have been this year, New Albany has turned some heads with its ability to regroup after losing over 20 seniors from a team that was defeated by LHS in the third round of the 4A playoffs. (more…) (October 13, 2011, Page 6)

Lafayette’s D has offense’s back at Tunica

TUNICA — A fast start to games has been the key to success most of the season for the Lafayette Commodores. Friday night, in their region road opener against Tunica-Rosa Fort, the Commodores were better in the second half.

On a night when the offense struggled to find its usual rhythm until the final 24 minutes of action, it was the defense that paced the No. 1 ranked Commodores early in their 43-6 win over the Lions.

LHS (8-0 overall, 2-0 in Region 2-4A) garnered the first points of the game on a safety when linebacker Jamel Dennis crushed Rosa Fort’s Darrell Lovelady in the end zone. Pressure from the defensive line made it tough on both of Tunica’s quarterbacks to find receivers or hand off to runners in the backfield. (October 10, 2011, Page 1B)

‘Dores finish strong to tame Lions

Area teams looking to be road warriors

A better overall effort, more focus on getting better as a team and keeping things going the way they have been are the main themes for area football coaches heading into tonight’s region games.

All three teams will be on the road tonight, a week before all three return to their respective home fields. Lafayette, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by the Associated Press and No. 2 in the state in the poll, travels to play Tunica-Rosa Fort in its first Region 2-4A game of the year. Oxford will be on the road at Lake Cormorant, while Water Valley is at South Pontotoc. All three games begin at 7. Lafayette’s game can be heard on 93.7 FM. Oxford can be heard on 95.5 FM and 102.1 FM, while the Blue Devils can be heard on 105.5 FM. (October 7, 2011, Page 6A)

No. 1 ‘Dores headed to Delta Friday

A week after throttling Lewisburg at home in the Region 2-4A opener, the Lafayette Commodores hit the road this week for their first region road game of the year.

Lafayette (7-0 overall) puts its No. 1 ranking in the state on the line against the Tunica-Rosa Fort Lions, a team that always has a surplus of big, strong, fast athletes that can any head coach just a little nervous. (October 6, 2011, Page 6)
