‘Dores sharp again in rout of Warriors
The No. 1 ranked Lafayette Commodores dominated Senatobia in every aspect of the game Friday night, beating the Warriors 54-7 at William L Buford Stadium. The Commodores improved to 8-0 overall on the year and 4-0 in Region 2-4A play despite starting the game more on the sluggish side. (October 11, 2010, Page 1B)

Lafayette’s Gooch earns POW award
Friday’s outstanding all-around performance for Lafayette’s Anfernee Gooch at Center Hill almost didn’t happen. Instead of racking up 177 yards receiving and an additional 93 yards through the return game, Gooch almost didn’t play because of a car wreck he was involved in the night before.
LHS coach Anthony Hart remembers Gooch telling him that he didn’t think he would play Friday night. Hart was preparing to move to Plan B when the senior was convinced that playing would not only be his best option, but the best option for the Commodores as well. (September 21, 2010, Page 6)
‘Dores learn lessons in latest win
Two valuable lessons about being prepared at the start of a game and not underestimating an opposing team were the big things the Lafayette Commodores took away from their 42-24 win over Center Hill Friday night.
A slow start by the normally reliable LHS defense resulted in 17 first-half points for the Mustangs, while the overall execution of the Commodores, a group that usually has no trouble putting teams away early, was only enhanced for the future.
For coach Anthony Hart, the win, which improved the Commodores to 5-0 on the year overall and 1-0 in Region 2-4A play, turned out to be a good test for his team. (September 20, 2010, Page 4B)
‘Dores outlast Chargers in Crosstown Classic
The annual matchup between Lafayette and Oxford is called the Crosstown Classic for a reason and the latest installment in the series played Friday night at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field definitely lived up to the moniker.
In a game that is usually decided by just one play, it was Lafayette junior defensive end Keeyon Tyson that produced the single-biggest play in a 21-14 win for the No. 1 Commodores. Just a little over a minute after the Commodores (3-0 overall) scored the game-winning touchdown on a 12-yard run by Demarkus Dennis at the 2:13 mark of the fourth quarter, Tyson was able to thwart a potential game-tying scoring drive for the Chargers (2-1) by slapping the ball away from quarterback Guy Cameron Billups at the LHS 13-yard line. Hill expects hard-fought Classic
Explosive was the word that Oxford coach Johnny Hill used several times to describe Lafayette’s offense and quarterback Jeremy Liggins earlier this week. Hill’s Chargers have the extremely tough task of trying stop, or at least slow, the potent Commodores, who have scored 83 points the first two weeks against Cleveland and Memphis Trezevant, Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field. Commodores ready for opener at home
Lafayette coach Anthony Hart doesn’t see a pushover opponent on his team’s schedule, especially not this Friday night when the Commodores host Memphis Trezevant in the first home game of the season.
The Bears dispatched Houston 42-26 in their season opener last week and Hart said that they have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. (August 26, 2010, Page 6)
Liggins, D. Dennis pace ‘Dores in rout
Shortly after Cleveland’s Tyler Slaughter eluded the entire Lafayette Commodore defense to score an 80-yard touchdown in Friday’s season opener at Mickey Sellers Stadium, LHS quarterback Jeremy Liggins started shaking his head and verbally encouraging his teammates.
If Liggins and the Commodores weren’t fired up to beat the Wildcats prior to kickoff, they were after his mini speech on the sidelines.
It wasn’t what the standout quarterback and reigning EAGLE Player of the Year had to say that was important, it was the emphasis of how he got his message across that made all the difference for a team that is extremely hard to stop when they are motivated. (August 23, 2010, Page 1B)
Commodores shake off rust in win over Pontotoc
The Lafayette Commodores capped its preseason with a dominating 14-0 win over Pontotoc on Friday in a jamboree game at William L. Buford Stadium.
When talking to Lafayette’s coaches, the phrase sluggish was used several times to describe the squad’s performance despite limiting Pontotoc to just 15 yards of total offense.
Such is life as the defending Class 4A North Half Champion. (August 16, 2010, Page 6)
UPDATED: Lafayette defense holds its own vs. Pontotoc in jamboree
The Lafayette Commodores defense looked to be in mid-season form while the offense did just enough to defeat the Pontotoc Warriors 14-0 in the jamboree game tonight. (more…) (August 13, 2010, Page 6)
