Oxford Chargers begin quest to win fifth straight state title
Oxford’s goal to garner a fifth straight state championship in tennis begins today with a home match against Grenada. OHS coach Louis Nash will try to win the 5A title without the services of four seniors who lead the Chargers to a 116-1 record over the last six years, including four state titles and 11 individual championships. Lady Chargers place second at State meet; Chargers finish third
Oxford’s successful swimming season came to a conclusion on a high note over the weekend as the girls placed second and boys placed second at the MHSAA Swimming State Championships held at the Delta State University Aquatics Club in Cleveland on Saturday.
The Chargers earned 62 points, while first-place Tupelo earned 138 and second-place Madison Central collected 100.
The Lady Chargers racked up 73 points, while first-place Tupelo earned 144.
Thirty-eight Class 6A and 5A schools participated in the championships.
Oxford took 10 boys and 10 girls to compete in the meet under the current format.
Lady Chargers
The Lady Chargers were led by Dora Chen, who placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of two minutes, 3.38 seconds and third in the 100-yard freestyle (56.66).
Chen also helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Cynthia Torma, Hayley Murphy and Sarah Wilson place second (1:48.88) and the 400 free relay team of Torma, Marta Burwell and Grace Orman place second (3:50.52).
Other Lady Chargers who placed were:
-Ashleigh Moore took first in the 200 IM (2:14.81).
-Burwell placed third in the 50 free (25.75) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:26.58).
-Orman placed seventh in the 200 IM (2:27.90) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:08.93).
-Torma placed fifth in the 50 free (26.86).
-Lizzy Leary placed fifth in the 500 free (5:46.18) and seventh in the 100 back (1:09.04).
-The 200 medley relay team of Burwell, Murphy, Orman and Wilson placed fourth (2:03.09).
Chargers
The Oxford boys were led by Andrew Mullen, who placed first in the 200 free (1:45.84). He also placed second in the 100 butterfly (52.97) and helped the 400 free relay team of Dion Kevin, Jack Cutler and Chase Gladden place third (3:30.39) and the 200 medly relay team of Taide Ding, Gladden and Brian Clancy place fourth (1:47.90).
Other Chargers who placed were:
-Clancy placed eighth in the 200 IM (2:12.59) and third in the 500-yard free (5:12.88).
-Ding placed seventh in the 100 butterfly (59.84).
-Cutler placed fifth in the 500-yard free (5:15.10).
-Thomas Murphy placed eighth in the 100 back (1:04.11).

Oxford tennis rolls to North Half

Chargers pound Clarksdale in 5A opener
