A three-day break due to last week’s heavy snowstorm ended up being a huge help to the Lafayette Lady Commodores on Friday night against Senatobia. LHS broke a two-game losing streak in District 2-4A play by downing the Lady Warriors 71-38 in the LHS gym. The win improved the Lady Commodores to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the district.
Lafayette’s boys weren’t as fortunate as the girls, losting to Senatobia 49-40 in the nightcap. (January 17, 2011, Page 8)
A late surge proved to be crucial for the Lafayette Lady Commodores in their 53-41 victory over Horn Lake, while the Commodores were unable to find consistent scoring in their 52-30 loss to the Eagles on Day 1 of the “O” Town Showdown at the Oxford High gym on Wednesday evening. There were more signs the Lafayette Commodores were starting to come together as a boys basketball team Friday night in a matchup with Lewisburg in the LHS gym. The Commodores may have lost 48-43 to the visiting Patriots, but instead of falling behind early and eventually losing by double digits, the Commodores showed some grit by rallying from an eight-point deficit in the in the third quarter to pull into the lead late in the fourth quarter. Empty possessions and the inability to rebound or cover the Lady Lions’ 3-point attack proved to be detrimental early in the game, but as the game progressed, Lafayette was able to adapt enough to pull out a 58-51 victory in overtime over Rosa Fort.
In the boys matchup, the Commodores fell behind early and were never able to recover, falling to the Lions 73-53. (December 15, 2010, Page 8A)
The Lady Commodores remained perfect with a 59-28 win over Tupelo, while the Commodores fell 65-40 to the Golden Wave in the final game of the one-day tournament.
For LHS girls coach Amy Sutton and boys coach Eric Robertson, the tournament, and three games this past week, served as a good measuring stick of where both of their teams are heading into district play this week. (December 13, 2010, Page 2B)
This weekend, the Lady ‘Dores will participate in Hickory Flat’s jamboree, a week before Water Valley and Oxford’s squads open their season, and a month before the Commodores begin their season.
This year, according to coach Amy Sutton, the Lady ‘Dores will once again be a well-balanced squad with every player expected to pull their own weight. (October 29, 2010, Page 7A)
Lafayette wrapped up successful seasons on the track Monday with two top five finishes for the Commodore and Lady Commodore teams in the MHSAA Class 4A meet held at Pearl High School.
Lafayette’s boys garnered 44 points to finish in third place out of 33 teams, while Lafayette’s girls scored 47.50 to finish fourth out of 27 teams in the field. (May 19, 2010, Page 7)
