Bailey tackles Jaguars to earn POW honor
The Blue Devils took care of business Friday, routing the visiting J.Z. George Jaguars 61-6.
Leading Water Valley’s defensive unit was senior Q. Bailey, who racked up 15 tackles in the first half before being pulled for reserves.
Bailey’s 15 tackles in just two quarters was a rare feat that veteran defensive coordinator Richard Russo has never seen. (September 25, 2012, Page 7)
Oxford defense earns Player of the Week nod
Oxford’s defenders must have felt hot following the Chargers’ 19-0 win over Lafayette in the annual Crosstown Classic. In a game that was dominated by the Chargers from start to finish, the OHS defense shined the brightest in a victory that not only ended a six-game losing streak to the Commodores, but also ended Lafayette’s 34-game winning streak.
It was an effort that won’t be forgotten by anyone associated with OHS for a long time. It was an effort — by all 11 starters and numerous backups — that garnered the unit this week’s Player of the Week honors.
Oxford defensive coordinator Steve Herring was beyond pleased with the effort his players gave in the victory and said hustling was the key to it all. (September 4, 2012, Page 8)
Brown makes all the grabs to earn Player of Week honor
Football is not supposed to look this easy for Oxford’s Nick Brown. After spending the bulk of his high school career playing for hoops coach Drew Tyler, the 5-foot-10, 155-pound Brown decided to play football this past spring. LHS starts Robertson Era off right
Leave it to the Lafayette Commodores to win a dramatic defensive struggle in Eric Robertson’s head coaching debut. Sparked by an early interception returned for a touchdown by linebacker Chequille Williams, the Commodores scratched and clawed their way to an 8-3 win at William L. Buford Stadium on Friday. Lafayette players dominate 2011 Region 2-4A roster
Lafayette’s football players dominated the Region 2-4A team, which was voted on and released Thursday by the region’s coaches. Quarterback Jeremy Liggins was named Player of the Year. Liggins’ leadership, dedication paced LHS in 2011
There were a lot reasons why the Lafayette Commodores finished the season ranked No. 1 overall in the state and with a second straight MHSAA Class 4A state title trophy to put on display. A bevy of talented players and a very organized coaching staff are at the top of the list of reasons why the Commodores reeled off another 16-0 season, but leadership provided by key players was also a major reason for the immense success. ‘Dores think they can keep things rolling
JACKSON — Can Lafayette win a third straight Class 4A state title and keep intact a winning streak that has now reached 32 games? Those were the two big questions every reporter who watched Saturday’s MHSAA Class 4A state title game was asking following the Commodores’ 39-29 win over Laurel.
LHS coach Anthony Hart and his players who are returning for 2012 all had a positive frame of mind when giving answers.
