Spurgeon Leon Bishop — 50, died Monday, June 17, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Coleman Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Wyatt Alexander Burns — infant son of Jill and Dustin Burns of Oxford, died Friday, June 14, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. A private graveside service will be held at Eastover Memorial Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements.

Oxford’s Liggins picks MSU Bulldogs

A strong bond with the Mississippi State coaching staff led Oxford defensive end Darrius Liggins to become a Bulldog. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Liggins picked up an offer from MSU coach Dan Mullen earlier in the month after an impressive showing at a one-day camp Saturday.

Liggins first offer was from MSU and while coaches from other schools such as Ole Miss have come to see him during the spring, Liggins said his direct recruiter, Deshea Townsend, was the most intense about him coming to Starkville.

Oxford tops SHS to win All-Sports Award

Four state championships and balance placed the Oxford High athletics department back on top in Class 5A for the 2012-13 school year.

OHS won the annual All-Sports Award from the Clarion Ledger and the MHSAA by logging 376.5 points during the past year. The score is based on how each team, both boys and girls, finishes the overall season in MHSAA playoffs. The information is tabulated, with state championships garnering 30 points, runner-up finishes 24 and teams that make the playoffs 13.5 points. Oxford defeated Starkville by 25.5 points a year after Starkville defeated Oxford by 24.5 points.

Oxford Athletics Director Johnny Hill gave credit to his coaches, the school board and superintendent Brian Harvey for helping win the award.

Ole Miss lands JUCO CB

It didn’t take an official visit to Oxford for cornerback Quintavious Knight to know where he wanted to play. The Georgia Military College sophomore picked Ole Miss on Monday night, joining his teammate, running back Akeem Judd, as a Rebel.

Knight, who chose the Rebels over West Virginia, said he visited Ole Miss unofficially June 1 and everything else just fell into place.

Insell preparing Lady Rebs to get out and run

Matt Insell has been on the go ever since he was hired. As it turns out, that’s just his style.

Over the last couple of months, Ole Miss’ newest women’s basketball coach has assembled his staff, signed his first recruiting class and settled into Oxford by purchasing a house.

During a rare idle moment last week, the first-year head coach said his No. 1 priority this summer is to hit the court running — quite literally.

After assisting Matthew Mitchell at the University of Kentucky for five years, Insell wants his Lady Rebels to be in the best shape of their lives.
