Hunter Education Class

A hunter education class has been set for the 2012 season. The class will be held from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Oxford National Guard Armory. For more information, call 662-840-5172. All persons born on or after Jan. 1, 1972, that have reached the age of 12, must complete the hunter education course before they can hunt or obtain a license. (September 6, 2011)

Sight In Day

The Lafayette County Law Enforcement Officer’s Association will host a sight in day at the F.D. “Buddy East” Training Facility from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Attendees are asked to bring their hunting rifles (no automatic weapons) and site them in preparation for hunting season.

The event is open to the public, but those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Eye and ear protection will be provided to those who need it. While weapons must be unloaded when brought to the facility, attendees are asked to bring ammunition with them. Targets will also be provided. The training facility is located at 60 CR 3087. To get there, take Highway 6 West to County Road 309, and follow the road until it turns to gravel and bear left. (October 5, 2010)

Pride of the South, Marching Southerners Concert

The University of Mississippi’s Pride of the South Band and Jacksonville State’s Marching Southerners Band are set to perform a joint concert after the Rebels’ season opener Saturday against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.

The concert is free and will begin immediately following the game in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Fans can come to the east stands to watch. The concert will feature a standstill performance with four brief tunes. Both bands will be arranged by section and standing in a large arc on the field. (August 31, 2010)

Metcalf-Holden Co-ed Football Camp

This year the Metcalf-Holden Outreach Foundation is hosting its annual Co-ed Football Camp here in Oxford. This event will take place June 26 at Oxford High School. The camp will provide parents with an informational health fair along with a total-body boot camp to promote good health and fight the obesity epidemic. Fellow teammates and celebrity guests will also be in attendance. Terrance Metcalf is now signed with the New Orleans Saints. (June 8, 2010)

40th OHS Charger football reunion

A 40th reunion of the 1970 Oxford High School Charger football team is set for Saturday, July 17. Team members will assemble at the OHS athletic facility building for a tour at 5:30 p.m. and proceed to Hickman cabin on Woodson Ridge Road for food and fellowship. Reservations are $20 per person and are required prior to July 4. Hoops for Hope

Hoops for Hope, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament fundraiser, will be held Saturday at the Oxford Activity Center on Price Street. Team registration cost $40. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and games start at 10. Entry fee will be $5 for adults and $1 for children, ages 10 and under. Proceeds from the event will be donated to American Cancer Society. Special guest participants will include Dexter McCluster, Deshae Townsend, Terrance Metcalf and more. A raffle will also be held to win prizes provided by local businesses. (May 25, 2010)

2010 OHS Athletic Recognition Program

This year’s OHS Athletic Recognition Program sponsored by the Oxford Charger Athletic Booster Club will be Tuesday, May 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Kayla Mize Auditorium at Oxford High School. All parents of varsity athletes are invited to attend the program with a reception to follow in the OHS Commons. The format of this year’s program has changed from previous years: No tickets will be necesarry to attend the program, and no meal will be served. (April 30, 2010)

Third Annual Rebel Classic

A four-man-scramble golf tournament to benefit the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi is set for May 21 at the Country Club of Oxford. Ole Miss Head Coach Houston Nutt will be attending. Friends and colleagues are invited to form a team; however, individual players are also encouraged to participate.
