United Way of Oxford-Lafayette County invites the citizens of Oxford-Lafayette County to a celebration of United Way’s 40 years of helping the community care for one another. Donors, sponsors, volunteers, beneficiaries, agencies, friends and everyone else is invited to come to the Square at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 17 for birthday cake, balloons, parade around the Square, and brief comments by city, county, university and United Way officials.

In celebration of 100 years of operation, First National Bank of Oxford will host a County Fair on the Square from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9. Events will include, live music, games for kids, a display of antique cars and tractors, fair exhibits, and the Oxford Fire Department combat course. Everyone is invited to attend the annual Yocona Harvest Festival that will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Yocona Community Center. The festival will feature games, prizes, concessions, door prizes and a cake walk. Chances to be sold on a handmade quilt donated by the Yocona Homemakers. Door prizes to be given away every 30 minutes. A costume contest will be held at 7 and an auction will be held at 8:30. The Oxford-Lafayette Chapter of the MSU Alumni Association will hold its annual Send-Off Party at 6 p.m. Monday at Proud Larry’s. The party is to honor all recent graduates from Oxford and Lafayette County who will be attending Mississippi State this fall. The new MSU athletics director, Scott Strickland, will be the speaker. “Bringing it Back Home” — The Oxford High School Class of 1990 will celebrate its 20-year reunion June 4-5. The weekend begins that Friday night with a gathering at 824 Fillmore Ave. from 7 to 9 p.m. Classmates and their families will enjoy a picnic Saturday at the high school. A tour of the school will start at 11:45 a.m.. Former teachers are invited to attend. Food will be provided. The weekend will conclude Saturday evening with dinner and music at the Oxford University Club.

The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council hosts its annual membership picnic Saturday, May 8, from 5-8 p.m. at Plein Air Green in Taylor. Featuring music by The Cakewalkers and Jake Fussell and Jamison Hollister, with food and fun for the whole family. The event is free to YAC members and non-members are invited to join the arts council. (April 30, 2010)
The event combines a food-and-wine tasting with a silent auction, drawing items from local artists and authors, hotel and casino packages, authographed memorabilia from athletics and local celebrities, various gift certificates, clothing attire and more.
