Business plan seminar

A free seminar designed to assist small business operators in preparing a business plan will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Mississippi Small Business Development Center on the UM campus. The parts of the business plan are explained, i.e., industry research, description of company products and services, identifying target customer groups and a marketing plan. Spring Visiting Speaker Series

The Croft Institute for International Studies presents Dr. Donald Simmons at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Croft room 107 as its second speaker in the Spring Visiting Speaker Series. University of Mississippi alumnus Simmons was appointed the founding permanent director of the George and Eleanor McGovern Center for Leadership and Public Service at Dakota Wesleyan University in 2006. He also serves as the dean of the College of Leadership, Public Service and Graduate Studies. Business Start-Up Seminar

The “First Steps to Starting a Business” seminar will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the training room of the Small Business Development Center on the campus of the University of Mississippi. The free seminar outlines the basic steps to start a business. Topics include: regulations such as licenses and permits; legal forms of business ownership; basic marketing concepts to help analyze the revenue potential; lending terminology; outline for a business plan and other resources to assist in starting a business. Speaker Series

The Croft Institute for International Studies presents Dr. Roger Pajak as its first speaker in the Spring Visiting Speaker Series. Pajak, a senior adviser in the U.S. Intelligence Community, was formerly senior intelligence adviser at the National Reconnaissance Office and Senior Research Associate with L-3 Communications Inc. in Washington. Oxford Rotary Club

Meets at noon Tuesday at the Oxford University Club. Curtis Wilkie, Overby Fellow and Kelly G. Cook Chair of Journalism, will speak about his most recent book, “The Fall of the House of Zeuss.” (February 4, 2011)

Pruning Workshop

The Master Gardeners of Lafayette County will sponsor a free workshop on pruning at 11 a.m. Feb. 5 at the Lafayette County & Oxford Public Library. Jeff McManus, director of landscaping for the University of Mississippi, will discuss the proper techniques and times for pruning shrubs and tress in our area. (January 28, 2011)

A free business issue seminar will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Mississippi Small Business Development Center on the UM campus. The seminar is designed to offer topics of interest to small business owners. Each seminar will cover a different issue. Examples of topics that will be covered are: financing; managing a business; managing employees; human resources; customer relations; accounting; budgeting; real estate; cash flow management; tax planning; marketing/advertising; family-owned business; franchising; insurance and other issues. Historical, Genealogical Society

Members of the Lafayette County Historical and Genealogical Society will meet at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium of the Lafayette County & Oxford Public Library, 401 Bramlett Blvd. Gloria D. Kellum, vice chancellor emerita for University Relations, will speak about the life and contributions of James Z. George and work at his historic home, Cotesworth. Renewal with Hope

Baptist Center for Cancer Care is sponsoring Renewal with Hope, a gathering for patients and caregivers on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cancer Center, 504 Azalea Drive. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Connection, a weekly recovery support group for people living with mental illness, will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Magnolia Room of Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
