Jan Hawks Memorial Book Sale

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is accepting donations of books for its annual Jan Hawks Memorial Book Sale. The book sale will be held Feb. 21 – 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the lobby of Ole Miss Student Union. All proceeds from the sale will go to scholarships for University of Mississippi students and to the AAUW Educational Foundation, the world’s largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women. The foundation funds groundbreaking research, fellowships and grants, special awards, and vital community action projects. For more information on the AAUW, visit http://aauw.org/. Donation drop off sites are the Isom Center on the UM campus, High Point Coffee in the Belk Plaza on West Jackson Avenue and the Kroger grocery store on University Avenue. Relay for Life Fundraiser

Ent Consultants will host a fundraiser from 4 p.m. until closing Tuesday at McAlister’s Deli in Oxford. Ten percent of the sales made during this time will go toward Relay for Life/American Cancer Society. (February 4, 2011)

Canned food collection

The Oxford Exchange Club has a community-wide canned food collection for The Pantry that begins Sunday and continues through Feb. 14. Cans can be dropped off at Lammons Jewelry, Sears, Marti Stark State Farm Insurance (all on North Lamar), all branchs of M&F Bank, The Hampton Inn and The Oxford Police Department. Everyone is invited to get involved and deliver canned goods to these locations. (February 4, 2011)

Empty Bowls Pantry Fundraiser

The annual Empty Bowls fundraiser to benefit The Pantry will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Oxford-University United Methodist Church, North Ninth and University Avenue. Reserved parking will be available for patrons in the church parking lot at Tyler Avenue and 10th Street. For $15, participants get a bowl of soup, a piece of bread and a bottle of water, as well as an empty, collectors bowl, crafted and donated by the University of Mississippi “Mud Daubers.” Funds raised with benefit The Pantry, the local food bank. (February 1, 2011)

Church Fundraiser

New Orleans food and fun will be featured at “Jazzin’” from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 6 in the activity center of the Oxford-University United Methodist Church. Gumbo, red beans and jazz music, featuring jazz vocalist Effie Burt, will be available. Tickets are $8.50 for adults and $5 for children, ages 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the offices of OUUMC or Burns United Methodist Church between 9 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday. Proceeds from the event will go to Burns United Methodist Church. (January 28, 2011)

Chili Bowl for the Soul

The inaugural UM Chili Bowl for the Soul contest will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Ole Miss Student Union. Judges for the contest will be John T. Edge, renowned eater-writer-educator and director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, along with UM Chancellor Dan Jones and his wife. The $10 entry fee includes five tastes of chili, a bowl of the chili of your choice and a drink. All money raised through this chili cookoff will go to Oxford’s Interfaith Compassion Ministries to fight homelessness. The event is being hosted by UM Homeless Outreach, Office of the Dean of Students/Volunteer Services, Campus Programming and Aramark. (January 28, 2011)

Relay for Life Fundraiser

ENT Consultants will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser for Relay for Life from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Applebee’s. Tickets are $5. For more information or tickets, call 234-1337. (January 28, 2011)

Big Band Bash

The Big Band Bash scholarship concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at Nutt Auditorium on the campus of the University of Mississippi. Money raised by the concert goes to support the Patrons Scholarship Fund to help gifted music students. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling 915-7411 or go to the UM Box Office or at the door. (January 19, 2011)

Mardi Gras Bash

The Lafayette County Literacy Council will host Mardi Gras Bash 2011 at The Lyric Oxford on Saturday beginning at 8 p.m. Partygoers will enjoy dancing to Rockin’ Dopsie and the Zydeco Twisters, a live auction full of surprises, heavy hors d’oeurves and a cash bar. Tickets are $50 each and $90 for a couple. A limited number of reserved tables for eight people are available for $500. Tickets may be purchased at the Literacy Council office or by calling 234-4234. (January 19, 2011)

Shaw Benefit Fund

Robert “Bill” Shaw has been diagnosed with nasotharyngal carcinoma cancer, also known as throat cancer. He began treatment in May and the first cycle of treatment consisted of chemotherapy and radiation for four months. The second cycle of chemotherapy treatment was started in September and is continuing. A benefit fund for Shaw has been set up at Renasant Bank for anyone who would like to make a donation to help with expenses. (December 10, 2010)
