Red Cross Classes

The American Red Cross will offer an Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED/First Aid community class on from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 29. The cost of the class is $50. All classes are held at the Red Cross Office, 106 Skyline Drive. Interested participants should contact the Red Cross office at 236-1282 to register. OHS Forum

The Oxford School District will host an open forum for parents and community members to give input regarding the new high school at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Oxford High School cafeteria. As the architect begins the design phase, the Board of Trustees and superintendent want to give the public an opportunity to share their ideas about and expectations of the new building. (January 19, 2011)

Healthy You, Healthy L.O.U.

The second session of the community’s first wellness initiative will be held Thursday at the Oxford Conference Center and feature a free ballroom dance class for all those registered for the five-month “Healthy You, Healthy L.O.U.” program. Registration is still open for those who want to participate in this effort aimed at encouraging all residents to lead a more active lifestyle.
Due to the overwhelming response to the program (more than 600 have registered thus far), the ballroom dance class this week has been divided into two classes: The first class will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. for those with a last name ending in the letters A through M. The second class will follow from 7 to 8 for those with a last name ending in the letters N through Z. T-shirts will be distributed this week for all those registered for the program. (January 19, 2011)

Fatherhood Program

A fatherhood program, sponsored by the Family Crisis Center of Northwest Mississippi Inc., will be held at 5 this evening at the Lafayette County & Oxford Public Library. The speaker will be Wanda Turner. (January 19, 2011)

Applicator Training

The Lafayette County Extension Service will conduct Private Applicator Training for certification or re-certification on Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Training will be held in the Lafayette County Extension Service auditorium at 101 Veterans Drive. There is a $10 charge for each person who wishes to be certified. This must be paid the day of the class. Bring a check or money order only (cash will not be accepted), made out to MSU-CMREC. Business Basics Seminar

The University of Mississippi Small Business Development Center will host a free seminar focusing on basic small business issues from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Physical Plant training room on the Oxford campus.

Speaker Rick Schneider will discuss different topics of interest to small business owners. Each seminar will cover a different issue. Examples of topics that will be covered are: financing; managing a business; managing employees; human resources; customer relations; accounting; budgeting; real estate; cash flow management; tax planning; marketing/advertising; family-owned issues; franchising; insurance and various other issues.

Childhood obesity lecture

Nationally recognized childhood obesity expert Dr. Bernard Gutin of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill will present a lecture titled, “The unfit-kid epidemic: How it is damaging the health of our youths and what can be done about it,” at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Turner Center auditorium on the Ole Miss campus. After-School Kids’ Craft Class

The Lafayette County & Oxford Public Library will host a free After-School Kids’ Craft Class at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Those planning to participate are asked to pre-register for the class. For more information or to pre-register, call the library at 234-5751. (November 16, 2010)
